Volunteer mentors sought

Bright Beginnings, a volunteer-based outreach program for young, pregnant women and their children in the greater New Haven area, seeks English- and Spanish-speaking female mentors for its next Mentor Training Institute. The two-part session will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20 and 21, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Yale-New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH). Meals will be provided.

Bright Beginnings is sponsored by Friends of the Children's Hospital at Y-NHH in collaboration with Y-NHH's departments of social work and volunteer services, The Women's Center and the Ethel F. Donaghue Women's Health Program. Mentors help young mothers in critical areas such as child-rearing skills, job training, employment and education.

Retreat for Catholic students

Saint Thomas More Catholic Chapel and Center is sponsoring a retreat for Catholic graduate and professional students at Mercy Center in Madison, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 5, and continuing until noon, Sunday, March 7. Porter and Field prizes

Students enrolled in any degree program are invited to submit entries for the Porter Prize and Field Prize competitions.

The Theron Rockwell Field Prize, established in 1957 by Emilia R. Field in memory of her husband, an 1889 graduate of Yale, is given for a poetic, literary or religious work. The John Addison Porter Prize is awarded for a work of scholarship in any Þeld in which it is possible, through original effort, to gather and relate facts and/or principles and to make the product of general human interest. The award was established in 1872 by the Kingsley Trust Association (The Scroll and Key Society) in honor of Professor Porter, who received a bachelor's degree from Yale in 1842.

Entries may be considered for both prizes and must be submitted by 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, to Lisa Maloney, OfÞce of the Tercentennial, 2 Whitney Ave. For more information, call Lisa Maloney at 432-1093.


AIDS survey

Yale University Health Services (YUHS) and the department of epidemiology and public health are conducting a survey of Yale graduate students regarding their knowledge of, and attitudes about, AIDS. The study is a follow-up to a similar one conducted in 1990 that found that Yale graduate students had inadequate knowledge about the disease. A random sample of students will receive questionnaires in the mail. The information gathered will help to evaluate and improve AIDS education at the University. The questionnaires should be completed anonymously and returned by Friday, March 5.


March copier fair

The Copier Rental Program is inviting members of central and science area departments to a copier fair on Wednesday, March 3, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the lobby of 155 Whitney Ave.

The fair is in celebration of the new contract with Pitney Bowes and will provide the opportunity to view the company's analog and digital copiers, as well as meet with representatives of the Rental Program and the company. Refreshments and free prizes will be provided.


SOM leadership workshop

Victor H. Vroom, the John G. Searle Professor of Management at the School of Management (SOM), will conduct a Þve-day workshop titled "Leadership and Team Effectiveness," May 10-14.

Professor Vroom is an international authority on the psychological analysis of behavior in organizations and an expert in leadership, motivation, job satisfaction and decision-making. He teaches at the Law School as well as SOM, and has been a consultant to over 50 major corporations.
