Symposium to consider future
of broadcast, cable and net technologies

"Megamedium: The Convergence of Broadcast, Cable and Net Technologies," a symposium exploring what the expected future merger of the three media might bring, will be held on Thursday, April 29.

The event is being sponsored by the computer science department as its Alan J. Perlis Symposium, an annual event honoring a former Yale faculty member. This year's symposium, which also celebrates the formation of the Center for Internet Studies at Yale, will take place 9:45 a.m.-4 p.m. in the auditorium of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. A reception will follow the symposium, which is free and open to the public.

David Gelernter, professor of computer science and codirector of the Center for Internet Studies, will present opening remarks at 9:45 a.m.

The symposium will also feature the following guest speakers: 10 a.m. -- Kris Bagwell, senior vice president and general manager of Nickelodeon Online, the Internet version of the children's cable television network; 11 a.m. -- James Burger of Dow, Lohnes & Albertson, PLLC, one of the nation's oldest media law firms; 1 p.m. -- David Fellows, chief technical officer of Road Runner Computer Systems, Inc., a computer systems manufacturer and full-service Internet provider; 2 p.m. -- Miko Matsumura, chief strategist for BizTone, a firm offering Internet/Intranet services to businesses.

The four speakers will join with Gelernter for a panel discussion at 3 p.m.
