James E. Saiers, whose research centers on the movement of water, dissolved chemicals and particulate matter in subsurface environments, has joined the faculty of the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (F&ES) as an assistant professor of hydrogeology.
Saiers integrates laboratory-scale experimentation with mathematical modeling. One of his current projects is aimed at quantifying the abiotic and biotic controls on the fate and transport of herbicides and herbicide degradation products within agricultural watersheds.
Saiers earned his B.S. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia. He became an assistant professor of geology at Florida International University in 1995. While in Florida, he actively researched the effects of water management practices on the fluxes of groundwater and surface water in the Everglades. At Yale, he will teach courses and supervise projects in hydrogeology and hydrogeological modeling.
