Community can remember deceased loved ones at Evensong Service
On Monday, Nov. 1 -- also known as All Saints' Day -- the Church of Christ in Yale and the University Chaplain's Office will hold a special Evensong Service to commemorate loved ones who have passed away.
The service will take place at 8 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets.
"The feast of All Saints' will provide an opportunity for the Yale community to come together to gratefully and lovingly remember their loved ones who have lived in the service of others and God," says the Reverend Frederick J. Streets, university chaplain.
The feast of All Saints' can be traced back to the ninth century, when it was established by the Church as a day set aside to remember the martyrs who had died for the faith, says Streets. "The underlying idea is that the day of one's death is seen as dies natalis, or the day of one's birth into eternal life," he explains.
"We invite all -- and especially those who would like to remember a loved one -- to attend this All Saints' Day service at Battell Chapel, so that we may commemorate them as a community, through music and prayer," says Streets.
The Chaplain's Office is accepting names of those to be mentioned and remembered in the service. The Requiem by Gabriel Faure will be performed as part of the service, in dedication to all the names submitted.
To submit the names of deceased individuals for commemoration at the Evensong Service, call the Chaplain's Office at (203) 432-1128.
