Yale President to be cited for community leadership
Citing Richard C. Levin's encouragement and support of Yale's many contributions to the New Haven community, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce has chosen the Yale President to receive its 1999 Community Leadership Award.
The coveted award will be presented on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at a breakfast at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale. During the event, which begins at 7:30 a.m., the Chamber of Commerce will also recognize several individuals, including one from Yale, for their work promoting regional development.
First presented in 1966, the Community Leadership Award honors individuals who have distinguished themselves through their efforts to bring beneficial private and institutional resources to the city and region. In addition, nominees are lauded for their strong personal commitment to the Greater New Haven community, its civic activities and its people.
Previous recipients of the award include Sister Anne Virginie (1998), Richard F. Grossi (1997), Anne Tyler Calabresi (1996), Dr. James B. Comer (1983) and Richard C. Lee (1967).
Among the other Nov. 3 honorees is Gregory E. Gardiner, former director of Yale's Office of Cooperative Research (OCR), who will receive the Chamber's award for Biotechnical Achievement. Gardiner was OCR's director from 1996 until stepping down from the post this summer.
