Lawrence E. Marks, professor of epidemiology and public health and of psychology, has been appointed director of the John B. Pierce Laboratory, an independent research institute affiliated with Yale.
Marks is internationally known for his experimental studies of the human senses, with a special interest in the interactions that occur when several senses are activated at the same time. His work has covered a wide range of topics, from sensory adaptation and thermal discomfort, to the expression and communication of sensory experiences through language.
He is the author of the books "Sensory Processes: The New Psychophysics" and "The Unity of the Senses: Interrelations among the Modalities," among numerous other scientific articles and chapters.
Mark's appointment as Pierce Laboratory director was made by joint nomination of the School of Medicine and the John B. Pierce Foundation. He previously served as associate director and acting director of the facility.
The Pierce Laboratory was founded in 1933 to "promote research for the increase of knowledge to the end that human health and comfort are advanced."
