U.S. national identity will be
topic of talk by noted writer

Jim Sleeper, who has written widely on American racial politics and civic culture, will discuss "Americanism, 2000: A Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name?" at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, in Rm. 101 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St.

In the talk, which is the Richard V. Goldman Lecture, Sleeper will examine the emerging national identity in the United States and discuss whether Americans offer models of social justice and world leadership in the future. The event is free and open to the public.

A 1969 graduate of Yale College, Sleeper is the author of "The Closest of Strangers: Liberalism and the Politics of Race in New York" and "Liberal Racism." His reports and commentaries have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, including Harper's, The New Republic, The New Yorker, The Washington Monthly and The Nation. He is currently a member of the editorial board of Dissent.

This fall, Sleeper is serving as a lecturer in Yale's residential college seminar program, where he teaches a seminar on new conceptions of American national identity.
