Symposium honors work
of pioneering Yale researcher

The Yale Cancer Center (YCC) will host a symposium on the human papilloma virus (HPV) and cancer on Saturday, Dec. 4, in commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Dr. Francesc Duran I Reynals, a Spanish-born cancer researcher and former Yale professor.

The conference will be held 8:30 a.m.-noon in Rm. H110 of the Jane Ellen Hope Building, 315 Cedar St.

Cervical cancer, the second leading cancer among women worldwide, is inextricably linked to genital HPV, a common sexually transmitted infection. The technology to test for HPV-DNA has been developed and clinical testing in both the diagnostic and screening modes are underway at the YCC.

Duran was a pioneer in the field of cancer virology and in the study of the mechanisms of how tumors spread. His papers shaped the field of tumor biology and were often cited during the decades of the 1950s and 1960s. An early practitioner of translational research, Duran died of cancer in 1958 while living in New Haven. His widow, Maria Duran I Reynals, a current resident of New York City, will be attending the symposium at Yale.

The first freestanding cancer center in Catalonia -- the Duran I Reynals Cancer Center at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona -- was inaugurated in 1995. The Duran I Reynals symposium is part of an ongoing exchange program between the YCC and the Catalan Institute. This partnership is one of YCC's expanding programs designed to stimulate international collaborations and broaden the global scope of cancer research and therapy.

Featured speakers at the symposium include: Dr. Jose Costa, deputy director of YCC; Dr. Daniel DiMaio, professor and vice chair of genetics at the School of Medicine; Dr. Josep M. Borras, director, Catalan Institute of Oncology; Xavier Bosch, chief of the Epidemiology Service and Cancer Registry at the Duran I Reynals Cancer Center; and Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo, director of the division of molecular pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Medical School Dean Dr. David A. Kessler will deliver the closing remarks.
