When the American Studies Association honored outstanding scholars at its annual meeting in Montreal in October, two of the six honorees were Yale affiliates.
Matthew Frye Jacobson, associate professor of American studies, received the John Hope Franklin Publication Prize for the best book in the field of American studies.
His 1998 book, "Whiteness of a Different Color: European Immigrants and the Alchemy of Race," explores the political history of race in the 19th- and early 20th-century America. The book had previously won the award for the 1999 Best Book on the Social Construction of Race, sponsored by the American Political Science Association's Section on Race, Ethnicity and Politics.
Also honored was John Stauffer, who earned his Ph.D. from Yale last year, who won the American Studies Association's Ralph Henry Gabriel Dissertation Prize for "The Black Hearts of Men: Race, Religion and Radical Reform in 19th Century America." His study examined the friendship shared by four abolitionists, two black and two white, in the 1840s to 1850s. David Brion Davis, Sterling Professor of History, was Stauffer's dissertation adviser.
