Ralph Reed, former head of the Christian Coalition, will discuss "Values and Politics" at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, in Rm. 127 of the Law School, 127 Wall St.
His address, the 1999-2000 Robert M. Cover Lecture, is free and open to the public.
Reed has earned a national reputation for his strategic insights and grassroots organizational skills, which he currently puts to use as president of Century Strategies, a political and corporate consulting firm.
The company has been involved in dozens of political campaigns at every level of government, including six presidential campaigns. Reed and his firm have advised such individuals as former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Majority Leader Dick Armey, House Conference Chair J.C. Watts, Senator Paul Coverdell of Georgia and Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama.
Century Strategies also assists clients in the business and corporate world with their public relations and public affairs needs. Among the areas in which the firm has been involved are electricity deregulation, health care reform, banking and financial services, and the high technology industry.
As executive director of the Christian Coalition from its founding in 1989 until 1997, Reed built one of the most influential grassroots organizations in the history of modern American politics. During his tenure, the organization's budget grew from $20,000 in 1989 to $27 million in 1996; during that time, the coalition's membership grew from 2,000 individuals to 2 million.
Reed offered strategic advice in the formulation of both the "Contract with America" and the "Contract with the American Family," the two main legislative blueprints for the first Republican Congress in 40 years. Newsweek magazine has named Reed as one of the top 10 political newsmakers in America, and Time magazine has listed him as one of the
50 future leaders of the country.
A best-selling author and editor of three books, Reed has written columns for The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Policy Review. He is a sought-after speaker and television commentator, who has appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," ABC's "Nightline," CBS's "Face the Nation" and CNN's "Larry King Live." He also serves on the board of this.com, an Internet service provider.
