Several Yale building and renovation projects recently earned prestigious awards for their architects.
Berkeley College
The Philadelphia firm responsible for the recent renovation of Berkeley College, Kieran Timberlake & Harris, won an Award of Recognition in the annual Design Excellence Awards competition of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The award, which was presented to architects Larry Winner, Larry Regan and Steve Kieran at a ceremony on Dec. 2, was given for the architects' work in the "built projects" category. The architects helped design and plan the major overhaul of Berkeley College, which included upgrading all building systems, replacing windows, expanding the kitchen area, the restructuring of student activity space in the basement of the residential college, and making the college more handicap-accessible.
The 37th annual Design Awards program of the Connecticut chapter of the AIA yielded awards for three architectural firms for Yale-related projects. These awards were presented in October.
Gilmore Library
The Boston firm of Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott was among the winners in the "built projects" category for Yale's new Irving S. Gilmore Music Library, which was completed in the fall of 1998. The new facility, built in an inner courtyard of Sterling Memorial Library, greatly enhanced the storage and preservation of Yale's music holdings. The library is approximately 13,000 square feet and consists of book and periodical stacks, a Historical Sound Recording Studio, listening and reading areas, seminar rooms and an exhibition space. Its unique architecture includes a dramatic arched truss roof that allows indirect natural light into the new library.
British Art Center
In addition, the New Haven firm of Gregg & Wies Architects was lauded in the "restoration projects" category for its restoration of the Yale Center for British Art. The year-long renovation project, completed at the end of 1998, included a massive structural overhaul and the reconfiguration and refurbishment of exhibition space. All structural renovations were made in consideration of the original intention of the building's noted architect, Louis I. Kahn. The center first opened its doors in 1977.
Broadway area
Finally, the New Haven architectural firm Herbert L. Newman and Partners received the Honor Award for Architecture in the Community for its work in restoring New Haven's Broadway District, an enhancement project involving many facets of the University. The new AIA/Connecticut award identifies projects that respond to major restrictions and demonstrate "how the involvement of an architect transcends constraints." The firm is led by Herbert L. Newman, a critic in architecture at the School of Architecture.
