Duke's Men to perform in the
'Do Downtown' lunchtime series

The Duke's Men of Yale, an all-male a capella undergraduate chorus, will sing noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, in the atrium of New Haven's City Hall, 165 Church St.

The performance -- designed to spark the holiday spirit among those who shop, work or live downtown -- is part of the "Do Downtown!" series of free noontime events sponsored by the Town Green Special Services District.

Founded in 1952 by Saybrook College Master Basil "Duke" Henning, "da doox" (as members refer to themselves) have grown from an informal gathering of men who harmonized during study breaks into an award-winning group that has recorded several albums and performed throughout the world.

In 1996, The Duke's Men of Yale was named the best all-male collegiate a capella group in the United States by the Contemporary A Capella Society of America. The group has performed for Presidents Bush and Clinton in the White House, as well as for such celebrities as Ella Fitzgerald and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their tours have taken them from Florida to California and from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Europe.

The repertoire of The Duke's Men of Yale features a mix of jazz, pop, ballads, show tunes, soul and classical numbers, combined with humorous skits.

Through its "Do Downtown!" series, the Town Green Special District seeks to draw downtown New Haven workers out of their offices so they can experience the area's beauty, culture, talent and history.
