Today's economic climate, the future of the stock market in the next century and mutual funds -- these are just some of the topics that members of the Yale School of Management (SOM) are talking about on a new show on National Public Radio (NPR).

The show, "The Smart Investor," routinely features Yale SOM faculty experts in its hour-long discussion format, which also allows for calls from NPR listeners. The discussions are led by National Public Radio host and award-winning interviewer Faith Middleton.

The most recent show, on Nov. 30, featured Yale SOM Dean Jeffrey E. Garten and two faculty fellows from Yale SOM's International Finance Center (ICF): William Goetzmann, director of the center and the Edwin J. Beinecke Professor of Management and Finance Studies, and Roger Ibbotson, professor in the practice of finance.

The three talked about the status of the economy, Goetzmann's expertise on the behavior of mutual fund investors and Ibbotson's ability to forecast the Dow for the year 2000, as well as his current prediction for the year 2050. The Yale SOM professors also answered calls from dozens of listeners.

The show is among a wide array of NPR programs on which Yale faculty experts are featured.

"The Smart Investor," a collaborative effort between Connecticut Public Radio and the ICF, will air monthly during a 3-4 p.m. time slot on NPR stations in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts. The program is meant to give finance and investment information to both the experienced investor and the interested newcomer to the market.

Check futures issues of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar for the dates of upcoming shows. Local listeners can tune in on WKPT (from New Haven, 90.5 FM), WNPR (from Norwich, 89.1 FM), WRLI (from Southhampton, Long Island, 91.3 FM) and WEDW (from Stamford, 88.5 FM).

The show will also be available in digital format on the ICF website at http://viking.som.yale.edu.
