Ralph E. Gomory, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, will discuss "Internet Learning: Is it real and what does it mean for Universities?" at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, in Rm. 114 of Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, corner of Grove and Prospect streets.
Gomory's talk, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Sheffield Fellowship. A reception will follow.
Before taking his current post, Gomory worked for 30 years for IBM, starting as a researcher and rising through the ranks to become head of the Research Division and, eventually, senior vice president for science and technology. He retired from the latter post in 1989 to become the Sloan Foundation's president.
Gomory's research interests have included integer and linear programming, network flow theory, nonlinear differential equations, and computers. In recent years he has written on the nature of technology and product development, research in industry, industrial competitiveness, technological change, as well as economic models involving economies of scale.
Gomory has served in many capacities in academic, industrial and governmental organizations, and is a member of both the National Academies of Science and of Engineering. He is a recipient of the National Medal of Science, presented by President Bush in 1988. His other honors include the Lanchester Prize, the John von Neumann Theory Prize, the IEEE Engineering Leadership Recognition Award, the Arthur M. Bueche Award of the National Academy of Engineering and the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment. He served on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology from 1990 to 1993.
Gomory is a director of several companies including The Washington Post Company and the Polaroid Corporation.
The Sheffield Fellowship honors the University's former Sheffield Scientific School and its alumni, which include many notable inventors and industrial leaders.
