Security Procedures for Recess

The University Police Department issued the following statement on campus security procedures during the holiday recess.

The University's holiday recess begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Because all dormitory rooms and campus offices will be vacant during this period, students, faculty and staff should take special precautions to insure the security of items of value.

During the recess period, Physical Plant will change the locks on the college annex entryways and electronic key cards issued to students for all residential college gates and the Old Campus will be deprogrammed. University Police will increase patrols of University properties and residences.

During the recess, students are urged to:

* Make arrangements to store valuable items in college security rooms equipped with alarms. Valuables, which should be placed in those rooms, include stereos, computers, bicycles and any other valuable items.

* Check to ensure that all doors and windows are secured before leaving.

* Check to make absolutely certain that they take everything they need from their rooms. Police officers will admit no one to the college and particularly to dorm rooms during the recess period. No exceptions will be made.

University staff should determine what items of office equipment could be locked away. Articles such as small calculators, dictating machines and personal belongings should be removed from desks. All desks, file cabinets, windows and doors should be locked.

Staff members working during the holidays who observe unsecured doors or windows should secure them, if possible. If they cannot be secured, University Police should be notified. Remember: Open doors and windows invite theft.

Security is everyone's business. All open gates or open doors should be closed and locked. Anyone observing suspicious activity is urged to call the University Police Department at 111.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a safe holiday!
