For the first time since its reopening last January, the Yale Center for British Art will present a comprehensive display of its holdings in 20th-century art.
The installation, which will be on display Jan. 27-April 30, features a variety of media, from paintings to sculpture, drawings, prints, artists' books and documentary material. The collection ranges across the dominant movements in British art this century, from the Camden Town Group to Vorticism, Surrealism, the Independent Group, Pop and the School of London, through the young British artists of today.
Among the major figures represented in the display are Gwen John and Ben Nicholson, both of whom were favorites of the late Paul Mellon, founder of the British Art Center.
Also on view will be a number of recent gifts, including works on paper by Henry Moore, John McHale, Michael Rothenstein and Lucian Freud, as well as a painting by Carel Weight.
Timothy Barringer, assistant professor of the history of art who is teaching a course this spring on "British Art in the 20th Century," helped select and organize the works in the display.
