Everyday life at the "peak of the world" is captured in an exhibit now on display at the Yale-China Association.
Titled "The Allure of Tibet," the one-man show by Chinese artist Mei Lin features oil paintings of nomadic Tibetans engaged in their daily activities against the harsh, mountainous terrain that has defined their civilization.
"Mei Lin describes Tibet as a land at the 'peak of the world,' and captures within this landscape the people who are part of this awesome land," says Shelley Stonecipher, director of development at the Yale-China Association. "In Mei Lin's portraits, you see Tibetans as individuals, carrying water, herding sheep, hunting, cooking, watching and thinking."
The artist has been painting Tibetans since the early 1980s when, for a senior project at the Shanghai Fine Arts College, he lived and traveled with a nomadic tribe in Tibet. Mei Lin came to the United States in 1989, and now lives in New York. He recently won the 1999 Eighth Annual Competition of Manhattan Arts International Award of Excellence.
Mei Lin is the third of five artists from the Asian Art Connection, a consortium of Chinese artists in the New York area, to exhibit their work at the Yale-China Association, 442 Temple St. "The Allure of Tibet" will be on view in the association's Bierwirth Room 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Admission is free.
