Woodcut artist and illustrator Fritz Kredel will be honored on the centennial of his birth with an exhibition in the nave of Sterling Memorial Library and the Arts of the Book Collection.
The exhibit will include wood blocks, original drawings, proofs, published work, correspondence and regalia donated by the Kredel family. Examples of Kredel's work in association with fine presses in Germany and the United States will be displayed alongside his illustrations for children's books and items documenting his passion for military costume and regalia.
The exhibit will open on Wednesday, Jan. 26, with a slide presentation by designer Greer Allen, a critic in the graphic design department and former University printer. Allen's talk, titled "The Vitality of Fritz Kredel's Book Illustrations," will take place at 4 p.m. in the lecture hall of Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High St. It will be followed by a reception in the Arts of the Book Collection. The public is invited.
The exhibit will continue through March 16. The display is open to the public free of charge 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. For more information, call Christine de Vallet (203) 432-2642.
