Sexual orientation and Christianity is focus of the 'Opening Doors' series in February
The founder of the national gay and lesbian organization known as the Log Cabin Republicans and a minister who lost his post for performing same-sex unions will be among the featured speakers in a series titled "Opening Doors: Entering a Conversation on Sexual Orientation and Christianity" being held on campus in February.
The series, which is open to the public, is the result of a year-long collaboration between a group of Yale undergraduates, graduate students and faculty. Organizers hope to explore new territory on the controversial subject, while encouraging similar conversations at other universities.
The presentations in the series, which is free and open to the public, will take place Mondays at 3 p.m. in Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St. Discussion groups led by Yale professors, New Haven clergy and community leaders will follow each presentation. In conjunction with the series, there will also be ecumenical prayer services and concerts. Watch the Yale Bulletin & Calendar for information about these activities.
The schedule follows:
Feb. 4 -- A panel discussion on "Dispelling the Myths: Prejudices and Stereotypes Among Christian and LGBT Communities" will be led by Troy Perry of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. Panelists will include Steven Charleston, president and dean of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Irene Monroe of Harvard Divinity School; and Jane Ralph, educational services manager of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The legal, personal and theology perspectives of these issues will be discussed by Maureen Murphy, a New Haven lawyer who deals with gay and lesbian issues; John D. Allen, founder of the New Haven Gay and Lesbian Community Center; and Mark McCormick, a lawyer who is also a parent in a same-sex union.
