Yale students will 'Stand Up
and Dance' to make a difference

A hundred Yale students will "Stand Up and Dance" on Saturday, Feb. 5, to help make a difference in the lives of New Haven children.

The eight dance companies of the University will join forces at 8 p.m. that evening in a gala production showcasing their collective artistry while raising money to benefit various local charities. The show will take place in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets.

Coordinated by the Yale-New Haven Alliance for Dance at Yale College, this annual concert -- now in its third year -- will feature a wide range of dance styles, from classical lyricism to hard-core hip-hop.

"'Stand Up and Dance' is a wonderful event that uses the universal language of dance to unite two communities," says Sidra Bell '01 of Saybrook College. "Dance is an art form that is very effective in motivating and inspiring children. 'Stand Up and Dance' is a concert that will expose the children of New Haven to this art form."

All proceeds from the performance will directly benefit three local charities: Douglas House, an emergency youth shelter; AIDS Interfaith Network, a service organization helping to support people living with AIDS and to educate the surrounding community; and the Boys and Girls Club of New Haven, a private, nonprofit youth group that strives to enhance the quality of life for today's children living in a diverse urban society.

The Yale-New Haven Alliance for Dance at Yale College was founded in the spring of 1998 by Bell and Elana Aquino '00 of Silliman College. The first "Stand Up and Dance" concert in November of 1997 drew a crowd of hundreds and earned $4,000. The organizers of this year's event hope to far surpass that figure.

For ticket information, contact Sidra Bell at (203) 436-0965 or sidra.bell@yale.edu.
