Men's Basketball (5-11, 3-1 Ivy)

The Bulldogs dropped a 76-68 decision to Brown on Jan. 29 in Providence, RI. Yale trailed 37-25 at halftime, but rallied to take the lead midway through the second half. The Bears, though, regained the lead late in the second. Junior Neil Yanke (Akron, OH) had perhaps his best game in a Yale uniform. He made 12-of-19 shots from the field, scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Onaje Woodbine (Boston, MA) added 16 points and six rebounds.

The Bulldogs play at Albany on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. Yale then hosts Pennsylvania on Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Princeton on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. The Penn game will be televised live nationally on DirecTV Channel 611. Viewers must be DirecTV subscribers and have access to the gold or platinum package.


Women's Basketball (5-11, 2-2 Ivy)

Freshman Maria Smear (Annapolis, MD) scored 14 points as Yale completed a season sweep of Brown with a 67-52 victory on Jan. 29 in Providence, RI. Freshman Helene Schutrumpf (Boulder, CO) added 12 points, while junior Lily Glick (Cleburne, TX) and sophomore Jamie Riposta (Chester, NJ) both scored 10.

On Jan. 26 Riposta scored a career-high 16 points as the Bulldogs topped state rival Hartford 70-57 at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Schutrumpf had her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Yale plays at Navy on Jan. 31 at 5:15 p.m., at Pennsylvania on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. and at Princeton on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.


Men's Fencing (4-2, 0-1 Ivy)

In their Ivy League opener the Bulldogs fell to Pennsylvania 15-12 on Jan. 29 in Philadelphia. Yale won the epee 7-2 but dropped the sabre 6-3 and the foil 7-2. Sophomore Cameron Hill (Los Angeles, CA) was undefeated in the epee.

On Jan. 30 the Bulldogs lost to St. John's 19-8 in Payne Whitney Gym. The Red Storm won the foil 5-4, the epee 6-3 and the sabre 8-1.

Yale is at Brandeis on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.


Women's Fencing (5-1, 2-0 Ivy)

Sophomore Helen Liu (Englewood Cliffs, NJ) and freshman Sophie Jones (Atherton, CA) both went undefeated in the sabre as the Bulldogs opened Ivy League play with a 17-10 win over Pennsylvania on Jan. 29 in Philadelphia. Yale won the sabre 8-1 and captured the epee 5-4 but lost the foil 5-4.

On Jan. 30 the Bulldogs fell 15-12 to St. John's. Yale won the foil 6-3 but lost the sabre and epee 6-3.

The Bulldogs are at Brandeis on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.


Gymnastics (2-1, 1-0 Ivy)

Freshman Shoshanna Engel (Louisville, KY) and senior Betty Ky (Wayne, NJ) both set school records as Yale edged defending Ivy League champion Pennsylvania 189. 175-188.0 on Jan. 29 at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Bulldogs' score of 189.175 also was a school record. Engel's Yale record came in the floor exercise (9.850), while Ky's record mark came in the bars (9.825).

The Bulldogs host MIT and Bridgeport on Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.


Men's Hockey (8-7-4, 5-4-3 ECAC, 3-2-1 Ivy)

Junior Ben Stafford (Edina, MN) scored a power-play goal at 7:11 of the third period as Yale earned a 2-2 tie with Union on Jan. 28 at Ingalls Rink. Senior Jay Quenville (Malone, NY) and senior Jeff Brow (Bricktown, NJ) both had assists. Sophomore Luke Earl (Simsbury, CT) had Yale's first goal in the first period, and sophomore Dan Lombard (Andover, MA) made 29 saves.

On Jan. 29 the Bulldogs were shut out 3-0 by RPI before a sellout crowd of 3,486 at Ingalls Rink. Yale outshot the Engineers 34-24, including 16-6 in the third period. Senior Trevor Hanger (Guilford, CT) made 21 saves in goal.

The Bulldogs play at St. Lawrence on Feb. 4 and at Clarkson on Feb. 5. Both games begin at 7 p.m. and can be heard live in the New Haven area on WYBC (1340 AM). Coverage is also available on the internet at www.broadcast.com/radio/college/wybcam.


Women's Hockey (4-15, 2-14 ECAC, 0-7 Ivy)

Sophomore Sara Wood (Randolph, MA) and junior Lisa Meyers (Skokie, IL) each scored as Yale blanked Boston College 2-0 on Jan. 29 in Boston. Sophomore Katie Hirte (Cottage Grove, MN) made nine saves to post the shutout in goal.

On Jan. 30 the Bulldogs lost 9-1 at Dartmouth. Freshman Deanna McDevitt (South Boston, MA) scored in the first period.

The Bulldogs host Wesleyan on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Williams on Feb. 5 at 1:30 p.m. The Williams contest can be heard live in the New Haven area on WYBC (1340 AM). Coverage also is available on the internet at www.broadcast.com/radio/college/wybcam.


Men's Squash (11-1, 3-0 Ivy)

Yale cruised to 9-0 victories over Navy and Rochester on Jan. 29 in Annapolis, MD. Senior Kristopher Weiner (Brookline, MA) won both his matches in the No. 1 position, and senior Deji Olukotun (Hopewell, NJ) was a winner twice at No. 2.

The Bulldogs are at Brown on Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. and at Princeton on Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.


Women's Squash (8-3, 1-2 Ivy)

Junior Laura Keating (Canberra, Australia) fell to Trinity's Janine Thompson in the finals of the Constable Invitational at Princeton on Jan. 30. Keating, who plays in the No. 1 position for the Bulldogs, is a second semester transfer from the University of New South Wales in Australia. Senior Loren Smith (Rye, NY) also took part in the tournament for Yale.

The Bulldogs are at Brown on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. and at Princeton on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m.


Men's Swimming (8-0, 5-0 EISL, 3-0 Ivy)

Yale remained undefeated by defeating Dartmouth 187-97 and Pennsylvania 169-113 on Jan. 29. Junior George Gleason (St. Croix, VI) won both the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Other winners for the Bulldogs were freshman Tim Carey (University Park, MD) in the 1000 freestyle, senior Chris Bradford (Portage, MI) in the 200 freestyle, senior Mike Caperonis (Hillsdale, NJ) in the 200 butterfly, senior Tim Moffet (Tiburon, CA) in the 50 freestyle, senior Jon Malpass (Grand Rapids, MI) in the 100 freestyle and senior Brett Rubin (Columbia, MD) in the 200 breaststroke.

Yale swims against Harvard and Princeton on Feb. 4-5 in Cambridge, Mass.


Women's Swimming (4-1-1, 1-0-1 Ivy)

The Bulldogs cruised to a 184-98 victory over Dartmouth and a 175-114 win over Pennsylvania on Jan 28 in Hanover, NH. Senior Lindsay Wolter (Springfield, IL), sophomore Emily Grant (New York, NY) and freshmen Susan Cooke (Vero Beach, FL) and Heidi Kraus (Irvine, CA) were all double winners. Wolter captured the 100 and 200 backstrokes, Cooke won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, Kraus won the 500 and 1000 freestyles and Grant captured the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Yale swims against Harvard and Princeton on Feb. 4-5 in Cambridge, Mass.


Women's Tennis (0-2, 0-0 Ivy)

The Bulldogs opened the spring season with a pair of losses, 9-0 at Notre Dame on Jan. 29 and 8-1 at Michigan on Jan. 30. Freshman Elizabeth Kaufman (La Jolla, CA) had Yale's win against the Wolverines.

The Bulldogs host Massachusetts on Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m.


Men's Track

Yale finished first in an 11-team field with 95 points at the Northeastern Husky Invitational on Jan. 28 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The Bulldogs had three individual winners -- junior Jason Rife (Lincoln, NE) in the 400 dash (49.28), junior Ryan Barrows (York, NE) in the 500 dash (1:04.55) and junior Rob Reiter (Kansas City, MO) in the 800 run (1:56.12). In addition, senior Brian Yates (Hanover, NH) placed second in the shot put (51'2.75").

Yale takes on Cornell and Bucknell on Feb. 5 in Ithaca, N.Y.


Women's Track

The Bulldogs finished fourth out of 10 teams with 71 points at the Northeastern Husky Invitational on Jan. 28 at the Reggie Lewis Center. Winners for Yale were junior Nancy Wolcott (Bethesda, MD) in the 3,000 run (10:06.35) and junior Jen Newsom (Golden Valley, MN) in the long jump (18'9.25"). Sophomore Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu (Chestnut Hill, MA) placed second in both the long jump (18'2.25") and the triple jump (38'8.25").

Yale takes on Cornell and Bucknell on Feb. 5 in Ithaca, N.Y.


Other Notes

Mike Waldvogel was recently named the 1999 New England Men's Lacrosse Coach of the Year. Waldvogel guided the Bulldogs to a 7-6 overall record and a 4-2 Ivy mark. Yale was second in the Ivy League, its best finish since 1992, and was ranked 17th in the final national poll.
