The School of Architecture's exhibition series this fall will feature art and architectural works by historically significant figures, contemporary practitioners, and current Yale faculty and students.
The exhibits will be installed in three areas in the Art & Architecture (A&A) Building, 180 York St. -- the Main and North galleries, located on the second floor, and the third-floor mezzanine. Series highlights include exhibits of works by husband-and-wife team Charles and Ray Eames, as well as Daniel Libeskind and Ezra Stoller.
Dean Sakamoto, director of exhibitions at the School of Architecture, says the series gives perspective to contemporary art and architecture.
"It's always been my personal agenda to let people know about arts on the cutting edge," says Sakamoto. "The Eameses, for example, were in the forefront of the digital age, and now there's been a re-emergence of their aesthetic in popular culture. That's one of the reasons we're calling the Eames exhibit 'Re-Connections.' The eclectic mid-century modernism has re-emerged in everyday lives, and there is a need to understand it," he says.
"Libeskind," Sakamoto continues, "is an architect on the cutting edge. What he is showing is an example of his work that relates to the Jewish experience. With these exhibits by Libeskind, the Eamses, and also Stoller, we see how the shape art and architecture have taken in the past opens up the question of what may happen in the future."
In the Main Gallery
The series in the Main Gallery will open Wednesday, Sept. 1, with works by Charles and Ray Eames, known for their furniture designs, industrial designs, architecture, films and exhibitions. The display, curated and designed by Sakamoto, additionally will include vintage Eames-designed furniture by Herman Miller Inc., and re-issued Eames-designed furniture from Herman Miller for the Home and by Signorello of Westport, Connecticut.
