Development Office reorganizes Major Gifts division

Vice President for Development Charles J. Pagnam has announced a restructuring of the areas of the Office of Development that are responsible for gifts from individuals.

John E. Ormiston, previously a senior Major Gifts officer, assumes the title of director of principal gifts, which deals with capital giving from a specially selected body of donors.

Martha E. Schall will serve as director of individual giving, with oversight of the Major Gifts division, while continuing her previous responsibilities overseeing the Annual Fund, the Phone Program, Reunion Giving and New Initiatives. Both will report directly to Pagnam.

Several other appointments were announced as part of a restructuring of the Major Gifts division of the Office of Development in an effort to recognize the experience of many members of the staff and to add depth and breadth to management, according to Pagnam.

Patricia Doukas Zandy will join Usha Pasi as a deputy director in Major Gifts. Pasi and Zandy will report to Schall and will share supervision of the Major Gifts staff.

In addition, Lawrence J. Link, David P. Nichols, Christin C. Sandweiss, and Robert J. Spiller all will share in responsibility for managing some members of the Major Gifts staff directly. Pasi will return to frontline fund raising with a portfolio of selected prospects, and Zandy will retain part of her current portfolio. Sandweiss, Link, Nichols and Spiller also will continue to work directly with alumni and friends.

Pagnam commented: "This reorganization will allow the Office of Development to capitalize more fully on the strengths of our staff and the wealth of experience that our senior gift officers have acquired, both in the field and as managers, both during and after the highly successful '... and for Yale' campaign. We are well positioned now to continue to follow up on the gains made during that campaign and to forge ahead with new fundraising challenges as Yale prepares for its fourth century of leadership in higher education."

Pagnam thanked the Office of Development staff for the successful track record. He added: "During the recent transition following the conclusion of the campaign, I was especially grateful to Joan O'Neill for stepping in to manage the Major Gifts division so effectively as we prepared this reorganization." O'Neill is resuming her responsibilities as special assistant to the vice president for development.

The Office of Development has responsibility for fund raising for the entire University. The unit's fund-raising total in cash last year was $223 million.
