Men's Basketball (6-13, 4-2 Ivy)

Juniors Neil Yanke (Akron, OH) and Tom Kritzer (West Chester, OH) had key blocked shots in the final minute as Yale edged Princeton 44-42 on Feb. 5 before a crowd of nearly 3,000 at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Yanke's block came as time expired and preserved Yale's second straight win over the Tigers in New Haven. Freshman Chris Leanza (Parma, OH) scored 8 of Yale's final 12 points and finished with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds.

On Feb. 4 the Bulldogs lost to Pennsylvania 61-36. Sophomore Onaje Woodbine (Boston, MA) scored 10 points to pace Yale.

On Jan. 31 the Bulldogs dropped a 77-69 overtime decision at Albany. Leanza had 22 points and eight rebounds, both career highs.

Yale plays at Cornell on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. and at Columbia on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be heard live in the New Haven area on WYBC (1340 AM). Coverage also is available on the internet at www.broadcast.com/radio/college/wybcam.


Women's Basketball (7-12, 3-3 Ivy)

Freshman Maria Smear (Annapolis, MD) hit 8-of-12 shots from the field, including 6-of-8 three-pointers, and finished with 23 points as Yale topped Princeton 67-58 on Feb. 5 at Jadwin Gym. The six three-pointers were one shy of Autumn Braddock's Yale record. Freshman Helene Schutrumpf (Boulder, CO) added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

On Feb. 4 at the Palestra the Bulldogs fell 70-67 to first-place Pennsylvania. Junior Lily Glick (Cleburne, TX) had 17 points and six rebounds.

On Jan. 31 Yale topped Navy 58-50 in a non-league game. Smear returned to her hometown and scored 18 points, while Schutrumpf added 15.

For her efforts, Smear was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week. It is the third time this season she has been honored with this award.

The Bulldogs host Cornell on Feb. 11 and Columbia on Feb. 12. Both games begin at 7 p.m. in the John J. Lee Amphitheater.


Men's Fencing (5-2, 0-1 Ivy)

Sophomore Cameron Hill (Los Angeles, CA) and freshman Marcus Weickel (Bremen, Germany) both went 3-0 in the epee as Yale edged Brandeis 15-12 on Feb. 3 in Massachusetts. The Bulldogs won the epee 7-2 and the foil 5-4 but lost the sabre 6-3.

Yale hosts Columbia on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. in Payne Whitney Gym.


Women's Fencing (6-1, 2-0 Ivy)

Senior Sarah Weeks (Skillman, NJ) improved her overall record to 19-2 with three victories in the foil as the Bulldogs cruised to a 25-2 win at Brandeis on Feb. 3. Yale won the foil and epee 9-0 and took the sabre 7-2.

Yale hosts Columbia on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. inside Payne Whitney Gym.


Gymnastics (4-1, 1-0 Ivy)

For the second week in a row, Yale set a new team score school record. The Bulldogs finished with 190.450 points en route to victories over Bridgeport (188.075) and MIT (175.725). Two individual school records also were broken, freshman Andrea Wolf (Seattle, WA) on the vault (9.7) and freshman Shoshanna Engel (Louisville, KY) in the beam (9.8).

Yale is at MIT on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m.


Men's Hockey (8-9-4, 5-6-3 ECAC, 3-2-1 Ivy)

The Bulldogs dropped a pair of games in the North Country, 6-2 to first-place St. Lawrence on Feb. 4 and 4-0 to Clarkson on Feb. 5. Against St. Lawrence, freshman Nick Deschenes (Morinville, ALB) and sophomore Spencer Rodgers (Surrey, BC) scored, and sophomore Dan Lombard (Andover, MA) made 32 saves in goal.

Against Clarkson, senior Trevor Hanger (Guilford, CT) made 20 saves.

Yale plays at Rensselaer on Feb. 11 and at Union on Feb. 12. Both games begin at 7 p.m.


Women's Hockey (6-15, 2-14 ECAC, 0-7 Ivy)

Senior Sue Barnes (London, ONT) had a goal and an assist as Yale beat Williams 4-3 in a non-league game at Ingalls Rink on Feb. 5. Juniors Lisa Meyers (Skokie, IL) and Jane Resor (Greenwich, CT) and sophomore Sara Wood (Randolph, MA) also scored, and sophomore Katie Hirte (Cottage Grove, MN) made 15 saves in goal.

On Feb. 2 freshman Deanna McDevitt (South Boston, MA) had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Wesleyan. Meyers and Barnes also scored. Yale outshot the Cardinals 45-11.

Senior Julianna Schantz-Dunn (Amenia, NY) was named one of five finalists for the 2000 College Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is given annually to college hockey's finest citizen. The other four candidates are UMass-Lowell's Craig Brown, Maine's James Leger, Alaska-Fairbank's Ryan Reinheller and Alabama-Huntsville's Jay Woodcroft. In her time at Yale, Schantz-Dunn has been involved in the Community Outreach Committee and tutoring programs for New Haven public school students. During the summer of 1997 she worked in a family based program in Oak Park, Ill., that dealt with abused and neglected children, and she has travelled to Peru to help victims of malaria.

The Bulldogs host Maine on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. and New Hampshire on Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. Both games are at Ingalls Rink.


Men's Squash (12-2, 4-1 Ivy)

The Bulldogs blanked Brown 9-0 on Feb. 2 in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Joseph Cohen (Woodbridge, CT) won the only five-set match, taking the decisive fifth set 15-12. Senior Kristopher Weiner (Brookline, MA) cruised to a 3-0 victory at the No. 1 position.

On Feb. 5 Yale fell to Princeton 9-0.

Yale hosts Denison on Feb. 12 at 4 p.m.


Women's Squash (10-4, 2-3 Ivy)

Sophomore Colleen Terry (Seattle, WA) was a 3-2 winner in the No. 5 position as the Bulldogs topped Brown 9-0 on Feb. 2 in Providence, R.I. Terry captured the fifth set 9-5. Yale won the other eight matches 3-0.

On Feb. 5 the Bulldogs lost 5-4 at Princeton but beat Franklin & Marshall 8-1.

Yale is off until it hosts the Howe Cup on Feb. 18-20 in Payne Whitney Gym.


Men's Swimming (8-2, 5-2 EISL, 3-2 Ivy)

In the annual HYP meet on Feb. 4-5 in Cambridge, Mass., the Bulldogs fell to Harvard 215.5-137.5 and Princeton 209.5-143.5. Winners for Yale were senior Stephen Fahy (Paget, Bermuda) in the 400 IM (3:54.64) and freshman Greg Palumbo (Randolph, NJ) in the 500 freestyle (4:27.32).

The Bulldogs swim against Brown and Columbia on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. in Providence, R.I.


Women's Swimming (6-3-1, 3-2-1 Ivy)

Yale lost to Harvard 189-111 and Princeton 218-82 in the annual HYP meet on Feb. 4-5 in Cambridge, Mass. Freshman Bates Gregory (Duxbury, MA) won the 1-meter diving, while sophomore Emily Grant (New York, NY) captured the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.80.

The Bulldogs swim at Brown on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.


Men's Tennis (1-0, 0-0 Ivy)

The Bulldogs opened the spring season with a 7-0 victory over Boston University on Feb. 5 in New Haven.

Yale plays Oklahoma State at Harvard on Feb. 11 and then is at the Crimson on Feb. 12.


Women's Tennis (0-2, 0-0 Ivy)

The Bulldogs were off last week and host the University of Massachusetts on Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m.


Men's Track

Yale finished second with 60.5 points in a tri-meet with Cornell and Bucknell on Feb. 5 in Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell was first with 83.5 points and Bucknell placed third (48). Junior Jason Rife (Lincoln, NE) was a double winner, capturing the 200 dash in 22.65 and the 400 dash in 49.72. Senior Matt Taylor (Pittsburgh, PA) won the 5000 run (14:45.88), junior Rob Doyle (Chicago, IL) won the 3000 run (8:28.84) and junior Ryan Barrows (York, NE) finished first in the 800 run (1:54.93).

The Bulldogs take on Harvard and Princeton on Feb. 12 at noon in Cambridge, Mass.


Women's Track

In a tri-meet with Cornell and Bucknell on Feb. 5 in Ithaca, N.Y., the Bulldogs placed second with 59 points. Cornell was first with a score of 73 and Bucknell was third (49). Winners for Yale were sophomore Sikira Backus (Princeton, NJ) in the 55 dash (7.34), junior Melanie Harris (New Rochelle, NY) in the weight throw (58'11.25") and freshman Kate O'Neill (Milton, MA) in the 3000 run (10:03.44).

Yale battles Harvard and Princeton on Feb. 12 in Cambridge, Mass.
