Former Big 10 coach honored by Camp Foundation
Glenn "Bo" Schembechler, former head coach of football for the University of Michigan and Miami University (Ohio), received the 1999 Distinguished American Award from the Walter Camp Foundation during its annual dinner on Feb. 5 in University Commons.
The award honors leaders and innovators who have used their talents to achieve success, while upholding "the principals of Walter Camp," the Yale coach who helped develop the modern game of football.
Schembechler's record of 194-47-5 at Michigan, combined with his 40-18-3 at Miami, gave him an overall lifetime record of 234-65-8, making him the winningest record of any Division I coach when he retired from college football in 1990.
An advocate of team discipline, Schembechler took the Michigan Wolverines to the 1969 Rose Bowl in his rookie year, earning him Coach of the Year laurels from the Walter Camp Foundation. He added two consecutive Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles before he left college football to become president of the Detroit Tigers, a post he held until 1992, when he became a broadcaster for ABC Sports.
While on campus, Schembechler talked with Yale students about his career at a master's tea in Silliman College.
