Two 20th-century artists who shared a special bond will be the focus of this year's Lydia Winston Malbin lecture series at the Yale University Art Gallery.
"Marchel Duchamp/Jasper Johns: A Symposium" will be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26. The featured speakers will be leading art historians and critics. The symposium events are free, and the public is
welcome.
The program is offered in conjunction with the current special exhibition "Jasper Johns: New Paintings and Works on Paper," on view through April 9. A smaller exhibition related to the theme of the symposium and titled "Illusions, Allusions, and Delusions in the Art of Marcel Duchamp" will be on view on the second floor Feb. 22-April 9.
Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was born and educated in France, but after the New York Armory Show in 1913, in which his "Nude Descending the Stairs" was the most notorious exhibit, he spent most of his time in the United States. He soon became the acknowledged leader of the Dada and Surrealist movement here. At the end of the 1950s, Duchamp was "rediscovered" by what were then the emerging young artists -- Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, and others. Duchamp visited Johns' studio in 1959, when the younger artist was 29, and they formed a strong bond that lasted until Duchamp's death.
Friday's activities will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday's events will start at 10 a.m. The Yale Art Gallery is located at the corner of Chapel and York streets. For further information, call (203) 432-0600 or visit the museum's website at www.yale.edu/artgallery.
