Former European Commission official to present talks
Sir Leon Brittan, the former vice president of the European Commission who is currently a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the School of Management, will give a public talk and lead his first SOM faculty colloquium session this week.
Brittan, known on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the strongest advocates of free trade, will visit the University on four occasions during the current calendar year. He will address a faculty colloquium on "The European Union after the Year 2000," and will be involved with several programs at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS).
As part of the latter affiliation, Brittan will speak on "The European Union: Current Issues and Future Developments" at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Rm. 202 of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. The talk, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the European Union Studies Program at YCIAS.
Later that day, at 3:30 p.m., Brittan will speak at his first SOM faculty colloquium. His opening talk, "The European Monetary Union: Its Critics and Its Prospects," will look, in part, at the difficulties that Europe's new single currency, the Euro, is now experiencing. This colloquium, like all the others scheduled this year, will take place in Yale SOM's International Center for Finance at 46 Hillhouse Ave. It will be followed immediately by a faculty reception in Brittan's honor.
Brittan spent an academic year at the University as a Henry Fellow 30 years ago. His career has since taken him into the British Parliament, where he also served as a cabinet member during the Margaret Thatcher years. He is now vice chairman of Warburg Dillon Read.
Yale faculty members seeking more information about the faculty colloquium can call Karin A. Nobile, media director at Yale SOM, (203) 432-6010.
