Alvin Singleton

Concert will feature works
by prize-winning composer

Alvin Singleton, visiting professor of composition at the School of Music, will be the featured composer at the next New Music New Haven concert on Thursday, March 2.

The concert, directed by Ezra Laderman, will take place at 8 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, corner of College and Wall streets. The performance will include two works by Singleton, including "Apple" for clarinet quartet, and works by student composers.

Singleton has created works for the theater, orchestral pieces, instrumental solos, choral pieces and a wide range of works for chamber ensembles. His compositions have been performed by symphony orchestras both nationally and internationally.

A 1971 graduate of the School of Music, Singleton studied as a Fulbright Scholar with Goffredo Petrassi at the Accademia Nationale de Santa Cecilia in Rome. He served as resident composer with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, at Spelman College in Atlanta and with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His awards include Kranischsteiner Musikpreis by the City of Darmstadt, Germany; the Mayor's Fellowship in the Arts Award by the city of Atlanta; a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; and the Musikprotokoll Kompositionpreis by the Austrian Radio, which he received twice.
