"The Creation," a series of paintings depicting the Old Testament account of the dawn of the universe, will be on display for the first time on the East Coast in the exhibit "Sun and Moon: Different Lights in the Art of Ori Sherman" at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale.
The retrospective exhibit includes works created by Sherman from his youth until his death at the age of 54. It will be on view in the Allan and Leah Rabinowitz Gallery March 20-June 29. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit at the center 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 9. The event is free and open to the public.
Born in Jerusalem, Sherman came to the United States with his family at age 2 and later studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He lived and worked in San Francisco for over 30 years.
Sherman blended elements of folk art with Oriental traditions of miniature paintings to create colorful works that often counterbalance sunlit images with darker scenes. His works are in collections throughout the globe.
The 18 gouache paintings comprising "The Creation," which the artist completed just before his death in 1988, were described by poet laureate Richard Wilbur as "full of the splendor and creative play of that event" and by poet James Merrill as "very beautiful with touches of Chagall and Japanese screens."
The Slifka Center, at 80 Wall St., is open for exhibition viewing 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Admission is free. For more information, call (203) 432-1134.
