Endowed Professorships

Edward H. Kaplan is named the
Beach Professor of Management Sciences

Edward H. Kaplan, an expert in operations research and statistics, has been appointed the William N. and Marie A. Beach Professor of Management Sciences.

Kaplan, also a professor of public health at the medical school, has developed novel methods for quantitatively evaluating HIV intervention programs. His applications of mathematical and statistical modeling to the study of HIV prevention were awarded the 1994 Lanchester Prize and the 1992 Franz Edelman Management Science Achievement Award.

Kaplan's research collaboration with Robert Heimer, associate professor of epidemiology and public health, demonstrated the effectiveness of New Haven's needle exchange program. Their work has been the subject of special reviews by the General Accounting Office, the Centers for Disease Control and the National Research Council. For this research, Kaplan was awarded the 1991 Connecticut Health Commissioner's AIDS Leadership Award, the 1991 New Haven Foundation's Ivy Award and the 1997 Ira V. Hiscock Award of the Connecticut Public Health Association.

Kaplan, who is also the director of the law, policy and ethics core at Yale's Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS, teaches courses in policy modeling, operations research, and data analysis and statistics, for which he received the 1991 Alumni Teaching Award from the School of Management. He has held visiting appointments at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of California at Berkeley, Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

Kaplan co-edited the book "Modeling the AIDS Epidemic: Planning, Policy and Prediction." He is the area editor for policy modeling and public sector operations research for the journal Operations Research, and serves on the editorial boards of several other scientific publications.

Kaplan served on the scientific program committee for the 12th World Aids Conference in Geneva. He is currently on the advisory board of Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School of Public Policy and Management, the Scientific Advisory Board of the American Foundation for AIDS Research and the Institute of Medicine's Committee on HIV Prevention Strategies.

Kaplan obtained his doctorate in urban studies and three master's degrees in operations research, city planning and statistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his bachelor's degree from McGill University, where he graduated with First Class Honors in economic and urban geography.

Alan E. Kazdin is appointed the
John M. Musser Professor of Psychology

Alan E. Kazdin, chair of the Department of Psychology, has been named the John M. Musser Professor of Psychology.

A member of the faculty since 1989, Kazdin is also the director of the Child Conduct Clinic, an outpatient treatment service for children with aggressive and antisocial behavior, and a professor of the Child Study Center and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies.

Kazdin's research focuses on the diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and prevention of psychological and psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents. He is particularly interested in the development and treatment of aggressive and antisocial behavior, such as theft, truancy and firesetting; the underpinnings of childhood depression; the interrelations and influences of parent, family, and contextual factors on child development; and the effectiveness of child and adolescent psychotherapy.

His recently published books include "Research Design in Clinical Psychology," "Methodological Issues and Strategies in Clinical Research" and "Behavior Modification in Applied Settings." In his last book, "Psychotherapy for Children and Adolescents," which was published in November, Kazdin argues that although there are hundreds of different therapeutic techniques for treating children with emotional problems, little is known about what works and why.

For his research in developmental psychopathology, Kazdin received the 1998 Award for Outstanding Research Contributions by an Individual from the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy, the 1999 Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology, the 1992 Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Clinical Psychology from the American Psychological Association, the 1987 MERIT Award from the National Institute of Mental Health and the 1986 Rivendell Foundation Award for Contributions to the Mental Health of Children and Adolescents.

Kazdin has been a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, president of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy and editor of various journals, including the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Behavior Therapy, Psychological Assessment, and Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice.

Kazdin earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Northwestern University and his B.A. in psychology from San Jose State University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with distinction. Before coming to Yale, he taught psychology at Northwestern University, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
