Exhibit celebrates 30 years
of women artists at Yale

Jonathan Edwards College (JE) is marking the 30th anniversary of coeducation by hosting an exhibition of art by women who are or were undergraduates at Yale College.

Titled "30 Years: Women Artists at Yale," the show is a collaboration between the Women's Center and Gary Haller, JE master and the Becton Professor of Engineering and Applied Science. It will be on view March 30-May 26.

The photographs, paintings, drawings and sculpture on view represent a range of views and styles.

"The works of women artists from Yale produced over the last 30 years use and reflect a wide variety of ideas, media and styles," writes the show's curator, Megan Heuer '00 of Branford College, in the exhibit catalogue. "There is clearly no one 'Yale woman artist.' The last 30 years have dispelled the myth of the Yale Man, so how could women, especially women artists be expected to hold and maintain a unified identity?

"In putting together this show," she adds, "my aim was to bring together artists who share certain identities: Yale alumna, woman and artist. But the multiple meanings of these titles become clear looking at these completely unique works of art."

The artists include Maya Lin '81, who is represented in the exhibit by her original pastel drawing of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. and by a photo of her sculpture "The Women's Table" on the Yale campus; Shira Weinert '95, whose contributions include a photograph from her series documenting her mother's breast cancer and her own as caretaker; and Lindsay Brandt '95, who has created computerized images of what she will be like at age 97. There are also children's book illustrations by Eve Rice '73, landscapes by Anne Diggory '73, and self and family portraits by Katy Schneider '86.

In addition, the show features works by current Yale College students Rebecca Armstrong '01 of Saybrook College, Natalie Frank '02 of JE, Farrah Karapetian '00 of Calhoun College and Jennifer Lanski '00 of Ezra Stiles College.

"In celebrating women artists at Yale and coeducation, it is the balance between alumna achievements and the experiments of current students that we aim to express," says Heuer.

A reception and master's tea will mark the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, March 30. At 4 p.m., Jessica Stockholder, professor of sculpture at the School of Art, will be the featured guest at a tea in the JE master's house, 70 High St. A reception will follow 5-7 p.m.

There will also be a talk on "Women at Yale: Then and Now" on Thursday, April 6, at a JE master's tea at 4 p.m. The featured guest will be Elga Wasserman, a scientist, lawyer and writer who served as a special assistant to the president on the education of women. Wasserman is co-author of "Door in the Dream: Conversations with Eminent Women in Science."

Both events are open to the public free of charge. Viewing hours for "30 Years: Women Artists at Yale" are 4-6 p.m. on Thursdays or by appointment. For information, call (203) 432-0356.
