Free performances highlight
college band directors' gathering

Six college bands will perform in free concerts in Woolsey Hall on Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1, as part of a conference hosted by the Yale University Bands.

In addition to the concerts, the Biannual Conference of the College Band Directors National Association Eastern Division and the New England College Band Association will include five presentations exploring issues relevant to college bands.

The bands featured in the concerts include the U.S. Military Academy Band from West Point, which will perform under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel David H. Dietrick Jr. on Friday at 8 p.m., and the New England Intercollegiate Honor Band, which will perform under the baton of Jerry Junkin, director of bands at the University of Texas at Austin, on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Yale Concert Band will take the stage during the second half of the Saturday performance.

Other bands who will make appearances are the University of Massachusetts Wind Ensemble, conducted by Malcolm W. Rowell (Friday at 1:30 p.m.); the University of Connecticut Wind Ensemble, conducted by Jeffrey Renshaw (Saturday at 10:45 a.m.); and the Crane School of Music Wind Ensemble, conducted by Timothy Topolewski (Saturday at 1:30 p.m.). All concerts are open to the public.

Friday's conference presentations will take place in Hendrie Hall, 165 Elm St. The first session will begin at 9 a.m. with a discussion of "The Music of Charles Ives" by James Sinclair in Rm. 302. This will be followed by a presentation at 10:30 a.m. by Frank Battisti, who will discuss "The Pulitzer Prize in Music: Will a Composition for Wind Band/Ensemble Ever Be Awarded America's Most Prestigious Music Prize?" in Rm. 302. At 4:15 p.m. Thomas C. Duffy, music director of Yale University Bands, will discuss "Hidden Treasures/Festival Favorites" in Rm. 201.

Sessions will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. with a presentation on "Teaching Conducting (Philosophy, Pedagogy and Product)" by Michael Haithcock in Sudler Hall of William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. The final session, "Issues of the Small College Band," will begin at 3 p.m. in Sudler Hall. This session will be moderated by John Jones.

Students with a Yale I.D. may attend any or all sessions free of charge. For non-students, registration is $10 for one day or $15 for both days. Pre-registration is encouraged.
