Yale senior Kathy Ching made her 156th hit at the March 7 softball game against St. Xavier in Orlando, Florida -- thereby becoming Yale's all-time hits leader.

Baseball (5-11, 0-0 Ivy)

Yale spent spring break travelling through Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. Junior R.D. DeSantis (Dunedin, FL) and sophomore Keith Reams (Moraga, CA) lead the team in batting (.314 avg.). Senior Jon Levy (Houston, TX) has made four starts on the mound and has a 3.15 earned run average. Senior Sudha Reddy (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) has started three games and has a 3.21 ERA.

The Bulldogs play Quinnipiac on March 22 at 3 p.m. and then have doubleheaders against Massachusetts on March 25 at noon and against Sacred Heart on March 26 at noon. All of the games are at Yale Field.


Men's Basketball (7-20, 5-9 Ivy)

Sophomore Onaje Woodbine (Boston, MA) was named second-team All-Ivy on March 9. Woodbine led the Bulldogs in scoring (14.7 ppg.) and was second in three-pointers (35), assists (53), steals (34) and minutes (35.3 per game).


Women's Basketball (11-16, 7-7 Ivy)

Junior Alyson Miller (Skokie, IL) was named second-team All-Ivy on March 8. Miller was third on the team in scoring (9.6 ppg.) and second in rebounding (5.5 rpg.). In addition, freshman Maria Smear (Annapolis, MD) was named to the all-rookie team. Smear led the Bulldogs in scoring (11.3 ppg.).


Men's Fencing (7-3, 2-2 Ivy)

Yale had four fencers qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 23-26 at Stanford. Senior Ayo Griffin (New York, NY) will compete in the foil, sophomore Cameron Hill (Los Angeles, CA) and freshman Marcus Weickel (Bremen, Germany) will compete in the epee and junior Mitsuhiro Sudo (Armonk, NY) will compete in the sabre.


Women's Fencing (8-2, 4-1 Ivy)

Five Yale fencers will compete in the NCAA Championship on March 23-26 at Stanford. Seniors Hannah Appel (San Francisco, CA) and Sarah Weeks (Skillman, NJ) qualified in the foil, sophomore Helen Liu (Englewood Cliffs, NJ) and freshman Sophie Jones (Atherton, CA) qualified in the sabre and senior Whitney Anderson (Littleton, CO) qualified in the epee.


Men's Golf

The Bulldogs open the spring season at the William & Mary Invitational March 26-28.


Women's Golf

Sophomore Sarah Seo (Lima, OH) was the individual medalist at the Hatter Spring Fling at the Pelican Bay North course in Daytona Beach, FL, on March 18-19. Seo fired a two-round score of 146 to win by four strokes. She shot two-under-par 70 in the second round. As a team Yale placed fifth with a 639.

The Bulldogs are at the William & Mary Invitational April 1-2.


Gymnastics (6-3, 1-0 Ivy)

The Bulldogs finished fifth with a score of 187.350 at the ECAC Championships on March 18 at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Freshman Andrea Wolf (Seattle, WA) placed third in the all-around (38.400). Freshman Shoshanna Engel (Louisville, KY) tied for fifth in floor exercise with a score of 9.675.

On March 11 Yale placed seventh with a school-record score of 190.925 at the Wolfpack Invitational at North Carolina State, and on March 3 the Bulldogs finished third with a score of 189.825 in a tri-meet with North Carolina (194.950) and Towson (195.425).

The Bulldogs are at the NCAA Regionals on April 1 at Penn State.


Men's Hockey (9-16-5, 6-11-4 ECAC, 3-5-2 Ivy)

Junior Ben Stafford (Edina, MN) was named first-team All-Ivy and honorable mention All-ECAC. Stafford led the Bulldogs in scoring with 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points. In addition, senior Trevor Hanger (Guilford, CT) was named honorable mention All-Ivy.


Men's Lacrosse (3-1, 1-0 Ivy)

Senior Chris McIntyre (Pine Brook, NJ) scored four goals and added two assists as Yale opened Ivy League play with an 11-10 victory over Pennsylvania on March 18 at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium. Sophomore Marko Lujic (North Haven, CT) also scored four goals, and sophomore Adam Oppenheimer (Amherst, NY) made 21 saves in goal.

The Bulldogs opened the season with a 7-5 win over Drexel on March 4, then fell to top-ranked Syracuse 16-8 on March 11 and beat Colgate 9-5 on March 14.

Yale is at Cornell on March 25 at 2 p.m.


Women's Lacrosse (3-0, 1-0 Ivy)

Sophomore Amanda Walton (Chestnut Hill, MA) scored three times and senior Heather Bentley (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) added a pair of goals as the 10th-ranked Bulldogs topped Pennsylvania 9-8 on March 18 at Yale Bowl. Freshman Amanda Sisley (Old Greenwich, CT) made nine saves in goal.

Yale edged Hofstra 13-10 on March 13 in the season opener and then cruised to a 21-5 victory over Holy Cross on March 15. Walton leads the team in scoring with 13 goals and one assist, while junior Clara Gillespie (Alexandria, VA) is second with seven goals and four assists.

The Bulldogs host New Hampshire on March 22 at 4 p.m. and then travel to Hanover, NH, to meet defending Ivy League champion Dartmouth on March 25 at noon.


Softball (4-10, 0-0 Ivy)

The highlight of Yale's 10-game trip to Orlando, FL, came on March 7 against St. Xavier when senior Kathy Ching (Portland, OR) became Yale's all-time hits leader. Ching's bunt single in the seventh inning was the 156th hit of her career, topping the mark Amy Scriven '97 established from 1994-97. Head coach Andy Van Etten picked up his 100th career win on March 16 when the Bulldogs beat Sacred Heart 14-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. Junior Kristen Maturo (Orange, CT) leads the team in batting (.314 avg.), while senior Teri Hickey (Tenino, WA) has a 0.39 earned run average.

Yale hosts doubleheaders against Fairfield on March 22 at 2:30 p.m. and Quinnipiac on March 24 at 2 p.m. before travelling to Providence for a twinbill on March 26 at noon.


Women's Squash (10-5, 2-4 Ivy)

Yale's Laura Keating (Canberra, Australia) fell to Princeton's Julia Beaver in five games in the finals of the WISRA individual championships on March 5 at Williams College.


Men's Swimming (10-2, 7-2 EISL, 5-2 Ivy)

Senior Stephen Fahy (Paget, Bermuda) will compete in the 200 and 400 individual medleys and the 100 butterfly at the NCAA Championships on March 23-25 at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Fahy is the Yale record holder in each of those events.


Men's Tennis (5-6, 0-0 Ivy)

The Bulldogs lost matches to New Mexico (6-1), the College of the Desert (6-3), San Diego State (7-0) and San Diego (5-2) during a difficult spring break trip out west. Sophomore Chris Shackelton (Reno, NV) went 3-1 playing in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions.

Yale hosts Rutgers on March 24 at 2:30 p.m.


Women's Tennis (7-7, 0-0 Ivy)

Yale went 2-4 on its spring break trip to Southern California. The Bulldogs beat Long Beach State (5-4) and Santa Clara (5-4) but lost to Fresno State (9-0), Washington State (8-1), Wisconsin (7-2) and UC-Irvine (9-0). Senior Jacklyn Fu (Hong Kong) went 3-3 for Yale in singles.

The Bulldogs host Boston College on April 1 at 12:30 p.m.


Men's Track

Senior Brian Yates (Hanover, NH) won the hammer throw with a toss of 162'6" and the shot put with a throw of 49'3" at the Clemson Relays on March 18. Sophomore Thomas Hocker (San Jose, CA) captured the 400 hurdles with an IC4A qualifying time of 52.06 seconds, and freshman Allen Czerwinski (Thompson Fall, MT) won the javelin with a throw of 206'.

Yale competes in the Colonial Relays March 31-April 1 at William & Mary.


Women's Track

Junior Melanie Harris (New Rochelle, NY) finished first in the javelin with a school-record toss of 168' at the Clemson Relays on March 18. In addition, senior Diane Potkay (Derby, CT) won the discus with a toss of 142'7'', and junior Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu (Chestnut Hill, MA) was second in the long jump with a leap of 19'8".

Yale competes in the Colonial Relays March 31-April 1 at William & Mary.
