Joseph P. Mullinix, vice president for finance and administration at Yale since 1993, announced that he is leaving to join the University of California system as senior vice president for business and finance.
Mullinix, one of the University's seven officers, had broad responsibility for management in the areas of finance, investments, facilities, human resources, auditing and auxiliary services such as Yale's dining halls, telecommunications and transportation operations.
"In seven years of service at Yale, Joe Mullinix accomplished the work of decades," said President Richard C. Levin. "With impressive mastery of both broad strategy and intimate detail, he guided the investment of over $1 billion in the physical rebuilding of Yale, transformed our business systems, reorganized and improved student services, and strengthened labor relations. The results of his enormous energy and keen intelligence are in evidence everywhere on our campus. He has been a trusted adviser and a valued friend. Yale thanks and salutes him as he leaves to take on another challenge, and we congratulate the University of California on its good fortune."
"I've loved working at Yale," said Mullinix. "Working with Rick Levin and my fellow officers has been a wonderful experience, and I'm grateful for the tremendous support I've received from them, the members of the Yale Corporation, the University's deans and my staff. I have an opportunity to take on a new and different challenge in higher education and it was the right time for me, personally and professionally, to make a change."
During Mullinix's tenure, Yale launched extensive, multi-year projects to rebuild Sterling Memorial Library, the Law School, Payne Whitney Gymnasium and the University's Central Power Plant. Yale also constructed its new Irving S. Gilmore Music Library and will soon complete work on its new School of Art.
Significant rebuilding of residential facilities on Old Campus, which houses Yale College freshmen, and residential colleges also was undertaken. A Residential Swing Dormitory was constructed to house the students of residential colleges on a rotating basis, permitting Yale to modernize and reconfigure the colleges during the academic year, as well as during summer recesses.
Yale also recently announced plans for new and upgraded facilities and equipment for its science departments and School of Medicine that will represent an investment of $1 billion.
Along with Provost Alison Richard, Mullinix also directed the multi-year project to replace the University's financial and human resources information systems. The state-of-the-art systems became operational in July 1999, ushering in a new era of technological and administrative support for the University's academic mission.
Mullinix, who served as Columbia University's chief business and financial officer from 1984 until he joined Levin's administration in 1993, will join the Office of the President of the University of California, located in Oakland.
Levin will immediately begin a search for Mullinix's successor.
