School of Music event celebrates its string program

The School of Music will showcase its century-long tradition of excellence in its string teaching and performance programs with "A Celebration of Strings" on Saturday, April 8.

The celebration, part of the school's fourth annual Alumni Weekend, will include two panel discussions and a performance featuring faculty and current and former students. All three events are open to the public free of charge.

"Life in a String Quartet," the first panel, will take place at 11 a.m. in Sudler Recital Hall in William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. It will be moderated by violist Miles Hoffman '73 B.A., artistic director of the American Chamber Players, as well as an author and National Public Radio commentator. Participants will include Julie Rosenfeld '82 Mus.M. of the Colorado Quartet, Peter Salaff '66 Mus.M. of the Cleveland Quartet, Syoko Aki '69 Mus.M. of the Yale Quartet (now an adjunct professor at the School of Music), Wendy Sharp '82 B.A. of the Franciscan Quartet (a lecturer at the School of Music) and members of the Tokyo String Quartet, artists-in-residence at the School of Music.

"From the Bow to the Baton: Reflections on the Transition from Playing to Conducting," the second panel, will be held at 2 p.m. in Sudler Recital Hall. Lawrence Leighton Smith, conductor of the Yale Philharmonia Orchestra and adjunct professor at the School of Music, will moderate the discussion. The conductors participating will include Peter Sacco '75 Mus.M. of the University of Connecticut, Anthony Princiotti '90 Mus.M., '91 Mus.A.M. of Dartmouth College, Jesse Levine of the Norwalk Symphony and Peter Oundjian of the Caramoor Festival. Both Levine and Oundjian have faculty appointments at the School of Music.

At 4 p.m., there will be a concert in Morse Recital Hall of Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. The program will include a movement from Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra with cellist and faculty member Aldo Pariso conducting members of the Yale Philharmonia, and soloists Erick Friedman on violin and Jesse Levine on viola. There will also be performances by the Thoreau String Quartet, composed of School of Music students, and an ensemble of double basses as well as other performers and groups still to be named.
