Miniconference marks the 30th anniversary of coeducation
The Yale Women's Center will mark the 30th anniversary of the admission of women to Yale College with a "miniconference" titled "Celebrating Coeducation" that began on Thursday, March 30, and will continue through Sunday, April 2.
The miniconference is designed "to ensure that the Yale community does not forget that coeducation is a relatively recent phenomenon in Yale's 300-year history," says Melissa Felder '01, who organized the event. "Coeducation has become institutionalized on many fronts -- from the appearance of an equal number of female members of the student body, to female athletic teams, to female leadership in many organizations. However, there are also many areas in which coeducation has a long way to go ...
"The purpose of this conference is to honor and recognize strides that Yale has made in coeducation but also to point out areas in which coeducation still needs to further progress," she adds.
Friday's activities include a "Town Meeting on Coeducation" at 4 p.m. and a "Film Festival of Coeducation" at 9 p.m. The latter will include the film "A Hero for Daisy" about the early days of women's sports at Yale. Both will take place in Rm. 101 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall (LC), 63 High St.
Saturday's program includes a panel on "Social Sciences at Yale" at 10:30 p.m.. in Rm. 116 of William L. Harkness Hall (WLH) , 100 Wall St.; a buffet lunch (with limited quantities of food) at noon at the Women's Center, 198 Elm St.; a panel on "Sexual Assault at Yale" at 1:30 p.m. in Rm. 101 of LC; an "Old Blue/New Blue Town Meeting" at 3 p.m. in Rm. 101 of LC; and a "Lilith Fair of Yale" music festival at 8 p.m. in the Calhoun College Cabaret, 189 Elm St.
On Sunday, there will be a light buffet (with limited quantities) at noon at the Women's Center; a panel featuring members of the Yale College Class of 1973 at 12:30 p.m. in Rm. 116 of WLH; and a panel on "The Role of the Women's Center in Coeducation," featuring former coordinators, at the Women's Center. All the events are free and open to the public.
In addition to the miniconference, the Women's Center is also cosponsoring the exhibit "30 Years: Women Artists at Yale," which is on view through May at the Jonathan Edwards College master's house, 70 High St.
