Baseball (7-14, 0-0 Ivy)

Junior R.D. DeSantis (Dunedin, FL) singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Bulldogs beat Sacred Heart 5-4 to complete a doubleheader sweep on March 26 at Yale Field. Sophomore Steve Dankof (Dayton, OH) hit a grand slam homer in the fifth. Senior Jon Levy (Houston, TX) pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits. Yale won the first game 15-5. Freshman Darren Beasley (Ramseur, NC) went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Craig Breslow (Trumbull, CT) pitched three innings of relief to earn his fourth save.

On March 25 the Bulldogs lost a doubleheader to Massachusetts 7-0 and 4-3. Freshman Steven Duke (Bayside, NY) went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the second game.

On March 22 Yale fell to Quinnipiac 7-5. Senior Brian Ivy (Austin, TX) hit a pair of solo home runs.

The Bulldogs host Marist on April 29 at 3 p.m. and then open Ivy League play with doubleheaders at Pennsylvania on April 1 at noon and at Columbia on April 2 at noon.


Heavyweight Crew

Yale is at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1-2.


Lightweight Crew

The Bulldogs are at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1-2.


Women's Crew (0-1, 0-1 Ivy)

Yale's varsity eight fell to Brown in the Ivy opener on March 25 in Providence, R.I. The Bears finished in 7:00.27, while the Bulldogs came in at 7:07.18. Brown also won the novice eights, the second varsity eights, the varsity fours and the second novice fours.

Yale races Columbia and Pennsylvania on April 1 in New York City.


Men's Fencing (7-3, 2-2 Ivy)

Senior Ayo Griffin (New York, NY) finished third in the foil at the NCAA Championships March 24-26 at Stanford. Griffin lost to Notre Dame's Ozren Debic in the semifinals and beat Penn State's Gang Lu in the bronze medal bout. Junior Mitsuhiro Sudo (Armonk, NY) placed 14th in the sabre, and sophomore Cameron Hill (Los Angeles, CA) was 14th in the epee. Yale's men's and women's teams combined to place seventh with 101 points.


Women's Fencing (8-2, 4-1 Ivy)

Sophomore Helen Liu (Englewood Cliffs, NJ) finished eighth and freshman Sophie Jones (Atherton, CA) was 18th in the sabre at the NCAA Championships March 24-26 in Palo Alto, Calif. In the epee, senior Whitney Anderson (Littleton, CO) placed 13th, and in the foil, senior Hannah Appel (San Francisco, CA) was 14th and senior Sarah Weeks (Skillman, NJ) was 17th.


Men's Golf

The Bulldogs open the spring season at the William & Mary Invitational March 27-28.


Women's Golf

The Bulldogs had the week off to prepare for the William & Mary Invitational April 1-2.


Gymnastics (6-3, 1-0 Ivy)

Freshman Andrea Wolf (Seattle, WA) qualified for the all-around competition at the NCAA Region 5 Championships on April 1 at Penn State. Wolf has an average all-around score of 38.125.


Men's Lacrosse (3-2, 1-1 Ivy)

The Bulldogs fell to 11th-ranked Cornell 12-4 on March 25 in Ithaca, NY. Sophomore Brian Hunt (West Chester, PA) scored three goals and senior Christopher McIntyre (Pine Brook, NJ) added one. Sophomore Adam Oppenheimer (Amherst, NY) made nine saves.

Yale plays at defending Ivy League champion Princeton on April 1 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast in the New Haven area on WYBC (1340 AM). Coverage also is available on the Internet at www.broadcast.com/radio/college/wybcam.


Women's Lacrosse (4-1, 1-1 Ivy)

Freshman Clarissa Clarke (Huntington, NY) scored five goals as the Bulldogs cruised to a 12-3 victory over New Hampshire on March 22 at Yale Bowl. Sophomore Amanda Walton (Chestnut Hill, MA) added three goals.

On March 25 Yale dropped a 14-6 decision to ninth-ranked Dartmouth in Hanover, NH. Clarke, senior Heather Bentley (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) and junior Clara Gillespie (Alexandria, VA) each scored twice.

The Bulldogs host Fairfield on March 29 at 3 p.m. and Harvard on April 2 at 1 p.m. The Harvard game will be broadcast in the New Haven area on WYBC (1340 AM). Coverage also is available on the Internet at www.broadcast.com/radio/college/wybcam.


Softball (8-12, 0-0 Ivy)

Junior Kristen Maturo (Orange, CT) doubled home two runs in the first inning as Yale edged Providence 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on March 26 in Rhode Island. Senior Carlie Ware (Mountain View, CA) added two hits, and senior Kristen Gengaro (Bloomfield, NJ) was the winning pitcher. Providence won the first game 3-1. Senior Ginger Dunn (Miami, FL) had a pair of singles.

On March 24 the Bulldogs split a doubleheader with Quinnipiac, losing the first game 5-2 in 11 innings and winning the second game 7-1. Freshman Laura Beckert (Winter Haven, FL) went 2-for-2 in the opener, while junior Monica Lebron was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases in the second game.

On March 22 Yale swept a twinbill from Fairfield 11-0 and 4-2. Senior Teri Hickey (Tenino, WA) allowed only one hit in the opener, while freshman Jackie Crispell (Longwood, FL) belted her first career home run. In the nightcap, freshman Amy Drega (Rockfall, CT) homered and knocked in three runs.

The Bulldogs play doubleheaders at Rhode Island on March 29 at 2:30 p.m. and at Fordham on April 2 at noon.


Men's Swimming (10-2, 7-2 EISL, 5-2 Ivy)

Senior Stephen Fahy (Paget, Bermuda) placed 29th in a field of 46 with a time of 2:01.85 in the 200 individual medley at the NCAA Championships March 23-25 at the University of Minnesota. Fahy also was 30th out of 40 swimmers with a time of 54.53 seconds in the 100 butterfly.


Men's Tennis (6-6, 0-0 Ivy)

Junior Scott Carlton (Upland, CA) won the deciding singles match at No. 2 as Yale edged Rutgers 4-3 on March 24. Carlton dropped the first set 6-3 but won the next two 6-3 and 6-3. Senior Kevin Park (Rockford, IL) also was a winner in singles at the No. 3 position.

The Bulldogs host Boston College on March 29 at 2:30 p.m. and then are at Navy on April 2 at noon.


Women's Tennis (7-7, 0-0 Ivy)

The Bulldogs host Boston College on April 1 and Temple on April 2. Both matches begin at 12:30 p.m.

Yale competes in the Colonial Relays March 31-April 1 at William & Mary.

Other Notes

Women's soccer player Ciara McCormack (N. Vancouver, BC) and football player Matt Proto (Hamden, CT) have been selected to represent Yale at the 2000 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference to be held May 28-June 1 at Disney World.

Four Yale athletes have been named to the GTE Academic All-District fall/winter at-large team: men's swimmer Stephen Fahy (Paget, Bermuda), men's soccer player Hiro Suzuki (San Diego, CA) and women's fencers Hannah Appel (San Francisco, CA) and Sarah Weeks (Skillman, NJ). Junior Dan Fleschner, who works in the Sports Publicity Office, will attend the ninth annual Collegiate Sports Journalism seminar at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.
