The latest honor to come the way of School of Architecture Dean Robert A.M. Stern is an Award for Excellence in Design from the Art Commission of the City of New York for a projected boathouse along the Harlem River in upper Manhattan. (See related story.)
The plan was commissioned by the nonprofit New York Restoration Project (NYRP), an organization chaired by entertainer Bette Midler that is committed to reclaiming neglected public space for recreational and community use throughout the city.
Located just south of Sherman Creek in northern Manhattan, the Swindler Cove site has a long tradition of recreational use. At the turn of the last century, many boathouses serving a number of competitive rowing clubs -- notably those of Columbia and Fordham universities -- flourished in this now-neglected stretch of waterfront. Although some boating activities still take place here, the area has largely fallen into disuse.
The NYRP project seeks to restore this public space to its former glory. In keeping with that goal, the boathouse planned by Stern combines a number of facilities under one roof. Part of the first floor will serve as a launching area for boats of various sizes, while the second floor includes administrative, exercise and conference rooms. A deck also on the second floor will give spectators a vantage point to watch crew practices and races.
Like boathouses of yore, this will be a floating structure. It will be reached by way of a gated promenade along a nearby embankment, and will be accessible by a series of ramped fixed piers.
The Swindler Cove boathouse project is expected to be completed sometime in the spring or early summer of 2001.
