Cotton candy will be among the free refreshments available to members of the New Haven community who stop by Cross Campus on April 16 to take part in Communiversity Day, the student-run celebration of town-gown relations. The day, which coincides with New Haven's Easter Egg Hunt and the annual JumpStart Festival on the Green, will also include a variety of games, arts and crafts projects, and entertainment for area youngsters and their families.

Day will be devoted to giving children 'a fun time'

Children are sure to find much to enjoy in downtown New Haven on Saturday, April 15, when Yale and the city of New Haven present several free programs for area youngsters.

Members of the New Haven community are invited to take part in Communiversity Day, the annual celebration of town-gown relations, will take place 10 a.m.-2 p.m. that day on Cross Campus (bordered by College, Wall and Elm streets).

Also that day, the New Haven Green will be the site of the City of New Haven's annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. and the Jumpstart Kidfest 2000 for children age 8 and under, which will take place 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

A variety of events aimed at youngsters age 7 to 13 and their families will highlight Communiversity Day 2000.

"This day is a culmination of a lot of the community service work that Yale students participate in," says Thomas Whitney, Class of 2002, one of the coordinators of the event. "It's a chance for Yalies and New Haveners to spend a day working together to give children a fun time."

This year's theme, "Learning to Play, Playing to Learn," will emphasize the fun and pleasure of the learning process. In addition to traditional games, activities and entertainment, there will be workshops on craft-making, sports, singing and dancing. Donald Green, professor of political science and inventor of the critically acclaimed board game, OCTI, will be on hand to teach children his new game, OCTI for Kids. In addition, there will be a construction center sponsored by the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden.

Kids will also have the opportunity to play on an inflatable trampoline and slide, have their faces painted, make slime, dunk a Yalie in a dunk tank, broadcast live on WYBC radio, make a video message for President Clinton and much more. A solar-powered car, a sailboat and a New Haven Fire Department firetruck will all be on display.

Non-stop live entertainment on two stages will include many groups that hail from the New Haven community, including the Latino Youth Development dance troupe and the Elm City Girls Choir. Others have campus connections, including the Duke's Men, Unity Korean Drummers and the Yale Dancers. Cultural dance performances will be presented by students from Hawaii, Vietnam, Ireland, Tibet and Africa. The Yale Children's Theater will present a drama for children.

Parents are also encouraged to come and learn about free health insurance and summer activities available for children.

As in past years, there will be free food, soft drinks and cotton candy for Communiversity Day participants.

Communiversity Day 2000 is sponsored by the Undergraduate Organizations Funding Committee, Yale College Dean's Office, Office of the President, Yale College Council of Masters, Office of New Haven and State Affairs, Dining Services and Custodial Services. The Pierson, Trumbull, Berkeley and Davenport college councils are also sponsors of the festival.
