Telemundo chief executive will visit as Gordon Grand Fellow Roland Hernandez, chair and chief executive officer of Telemundo Inc., the nation's largest Spanish-speaking television company, will visit the campus on Wednesday and Thursday, April 19 and 20, as a Gordon Grand Fellow. On Wednesday, Hernandez will be the guest at a master's tea at 4 p.m. in Silliman College, 71 Wall St. The following day at 4 p.m., he will deliver a Gordon Grand Lecture in the General Motors Room at 55 Hillhouse Ave. His topic will be "Traditional Media and the Internet: Transition, convergence and (best guesses about) the future." Both events are free and open to the public. During his visit, Hernandez will also meet with Latino student leaders and talk to students in the Yale School of Management class "Business and Regulation in the Television Industry," taught by Professors Reed Hundt and Gretchen Rubin. Hernandez sets the strategic direction and vision for Telemundo Group, Inc., a company committed to broadcasting bi-cultural programming that reflects the lives of Latinos living in the United States. Telemundo is currently available to an estimated 85% of all Hispanic households in the United States, covering 63 markets. Over the next two years, Telemundo plans to add 400,000 more Hispanic cable homes boosting the network's reach to an estimated 90% of the Hispanic market. The network's schedule features a wide range of offerings, including variety shows, original sitcoms, children's programs, sports and news. Telemundo has also formed alliances with major television and movie studios to broadcast their films and programs in Spanish exclusively in the United States. Prior to joining Telemundo in 1995, Hernandez was founder and president of Interspan Communications in Los Angeles, California, where he was engaged in directing a variety of services related to Spanish media. He also had corporate directorships with E-Ritmo.com, a Latin music Internet portal that he founded, and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Hernandez has bachelor's and law degrees from Harvard, and served on that university's Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and Law School board of advisors. He is also director of the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California.
The Gordon Grand Fellowship at Yale promotes dialogue and understanding between today's business leaders and students at Yale. The fellowship was established in 1973 to honor Gordon Grand, a graduate of the Yale College Class of 1938, and president and CEO of the Olin Corporation. During his lifetime, Grand endeavored to bridge the gap between business and academia by actively promoting the exchange of ideas and viewpoints between these sectors. Today, the Gordon Grand Fellowship continues this tradition by inviting prominent business leaders to Yale for one- to three-day visits. While in residence at one of Yale's residential colleges, fellows deliver one public lecture, meet informally with faculty and students at a master's tea and at meals, and participate in classes.
