Memorial service is planned for
chemical engineer Charles Walker

A memorial service will be held at Dwight Chapel on Saturday, May 13, for Professor Charles A. Walker, the Raymond John Wean Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering. He died April 12.

Professor Walker, who joined the Yale faculty in 1942, was master of Berkeley College from 1959 to 1969. In addition, he chaired the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Engineering and Applied Science. He also served Yale as director of undergraduate studies in engineering and applied science, chair of the Committee on the Combined Sciences Major and president of the Faculty Club.

Professor Walker's research interests focused on heterogeneous catalysis, photochemical reactions, water pollution control, and relationships between the social sciences and technology. He was one of the first in his field to become interested in the social consequences of engineering and published a book, "Too Hot to Handle," about nuclear waste management.

Born on June 18, 1914, in Wise County, Texas, Mr. Walker received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. in engineering from Yale in 1948. He previously taught at Texas College of Arts and Industries and at the University of Arkansas.

Professor Walker was a consultant to various industries and to the Connecticut State Water Resources Commission. His professional affiliations included membership in the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education. He formerly was chair of the Petroleum Research Fund Advisory Board and was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also was national director of the Scientific Research Society.

Professor Walker was married to the former Bernice Rolf of Kingsville, Texas. He also leaves three sons: Allen, John and Laurence.

Following the memorial service a reception will be held at the Berkeley College master's house.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Bernice, Rolf and Charles A. Walker Berkeley College Master's Discretionary Fund, P.O. Box 2038, New Haven, CT 06521-2038.
