Busman's Holiday Jazz Trio will perform on the New Haven Green on Sept. 30 as part of the "Do Downtown!" series.

Yale employees invited to 'Do Downtown!'

Yale employees watching with envy students' excitement as they begin the new school year might want to consider trying something new themselves this September -- a change in their lunchtime routine.

During Thursdays in September, the Town Green Special Services District is offering free entertainment at lunchtime with a program specifically geared to Yale employees who work within walking distance of the New Haven Green. Called "Do Downtown!," the series of free activities is designed to get downtown workers to venture out of their offices and enjoy New Haven events.

The Town Green District is attracting Yale staff members to the city's downtown with coupons for free ice cream and a chance to win a $500 shopping spree. The ice cream coupons were recently sent to employees in the mail.

September offerings will begin Sept. 9 at 12:10 p.m. with an event called "Do the Game Show!" Attendees are invited to play "TV Music Trivia" and the "Office Buddy Game," as well as participate in a scavenger hunt conducted by Alternative Starz. Prizes will be awarded. This event will take place in the Aldermanic Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 165 Church St.

On Sept. 16, Efraim Silva will bring Ginga Brasilera, a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture, to the New Haven Green's World Stage in a performance of capoeira -- an art form combining self-defense, dance, music and gymnastics. Those who attend this "Do Downtown!" event from noon to
1 p.m. will have the opportunity to learn maculele -- a stick dance that originated on sugar cane plantations. In the event of rain, the performance will be held in the Chapel Square Mall.

The following Thursday, Sept. 23, "Do Downtown!" participants can choose between two educational tours, both at 12:15 p.m. Jock Reynolds III, the Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Yale University Art Gallery, will lead a tour of the gallery, located at 1111 Chapel St. "Do Art! Mini Tour: How To Enjoy the Permanent Collection" is the title of his talk. Participants should meet in the lobby of the gallery.

The second talk, "Do History! Tour the Crypt" will take attendees inside the Center Church on the Green, where they will see a Tiffany window and descend to see the tombstones beneath the church meeting house, built over a portion of an early colonial cemetery. The oldest stone dates back to 1687. Participants should meet inside the church.

The final event of the month, on Sept. 30, is a performance by the Busman's Holiday Jazz Trio at noon on the World Stage on the New Haven Green. Members of the trio perform on saxophone, bass and guitar. In the event of rain, the performance will be held in the Chapel Square Mall.

At each "Do Downtown!" event, Yale employees will receive an entry form for an Oct. 1 drawing for a $500 shopping spree. One winner will be chosen.

"Do Downtown!", which began in May, will continue through mid-December. Each month, the Town Green District makes special offers to employees of specific downtown companies or organizations. Previous events have included performances by a swing trio and stilt performer "Amazing Andy," as well as a puppet show and an appearance by "Rally the Raven," the mascot for the Ravens, New Haven's professional baseball team.
