Scholar on families and illness joins nursing faculty
Kathleen A. Knafl, a sociologist who has spent most of her career working within nursing research, has joined the School of Nursing, where she will teach as a member of the doctoral faculty and continue her program of research into how families cope with a child's chronic illness.
Knafl comes to Yale from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She was executive associate dean at UIC and director of graduate studies at the university's College of Nursing. In addition to her work on families and chronic illnesses, Knafl has also made significant contributions to the development of qualitative research within nursing science. She is a widely sought after consultant at schools of nursing seeking to develop and expand their research activities.
Knafl is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Family Nursing, Capsules and Comments in Pediatric Nursing and Child and Family Health Journal. She is a widely published author and the two-time winner of the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award. She is an honorary member of Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nursing, and was cited in 1997 by the American Academy of Nursing for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing and Health Care.
