Chertow is honored for environmental work

Marian R. Chertow, director of the Industrial Management Program at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (F&ES), is one of two recipients this year of the annual Clyde O. Fisher Jr. Award of the Connecticut Bar Association's Environmental Law Section.

The award recognizes individuals or entities who have made a significant contribution to the preservation or enhancement of environmental quality through work in the field of environmental law, environmental protection or environmental planning.

Chertow was honored for overall work in environmental law and policy. From 1995 to 1999 she led a project called "Environmental Reform: the Next Generation," at the Yale Center of Environmental Law and Policy. This project was a multi-year, collaborative effort to consider future directions for environmental policy. As part of the project, Chertow coedited with her F&ES colleague Daniel Esty the 1997 book "Thinking Ecologically: The Next Generation of Environmental Policy," which is now in its second printing.

Before coming to Yale, Chertow spent 10 years in state and local government and environmental business. She was previously president of the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority, assistant town manger of Windsor, financial manager of San Francisco's solid waste program and director of marketing and development for Resource Recovery Systems, Inc., a private recycling company.

Chertow also wrote a book on recycling and municipal waste management while serving as senior fellow at the United States Conference of Mayors in 1989.

The Clyde O. Fisher Jr. Award honors a founding member and driving force of the Connecticut Bar Association's Environmental Law Section. Fisher made important contributions in the fields of environmental law, environmental protection and land-use planning. The other recipient of this year's award is Donal C. O'Brien, Jr., a partner in the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and a charter member of the Connecticut Council on Environmental Quality, who has also served as former chair of the board of the National Audubon Society.
