English Department alumni will
consider 'Prospects for the New Century'

The English Department will hold its first graduate reunion Friday-Sunday, May 12-14.

The intellectual core of the reunion will be a conference titled "English Studies: Retrospects and Prospects for the New Century," organized by Linda Peterson, professor of English and chair of the department.

Panelists include faculty members affiliated with universities across the country who are alumni from the years 1939 to 1996. Discussion topics include:

* "From the New Criticism to the New Historicism -- and After," moderated by Ruth Bernard Yeazell (Ph.D. 1971);

* "What is Literature?" moderated by Sarah Winter (Ph.D. 1992);

* "Graduate Education across the Decades: the Legacy of Yale Teachers," moderated by Jill Campbell (Ph.D. 1988); and

* "The State of the Profession," moderated by Yale College dean Richard Brodhead (Ph.D. 1972).

Social events include a reception at the President's House, dinners and a cocktail party in Beinecke.

Current students will meet with alumni for roundtable discussions on Saturday, May 13, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
