Memorial service to celebrate
life of John Blassingame

A memorial service to celebrate the life of John W. Blassingame will be held 1-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at Battell Chapel, College and Elm streets.

Professor Blassingame was a distinguished member of the history faculty since 1970 and former chair of the African American Studies Program. His books broke new ground in the emerging field of African American studies, sweeping away erroneous and stereotypical histories with rich, complex portraits of emerging African-American societies before and after the Civil War. Professor Blassingame passed away on Feb. 13.

A reception will immediately follow the service at the Afro American Cultural Center, 211 Park St.
