The Women's Health Program at Yale is sponsoring "A Mother's Day Celebration of Mid-Life Women" at 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at the Fair Haven Community Health Center, 374 Grand St. This women's health fair will feature information on health and wellness, performances by musicians and poets, and children's activities. The Women's Campaign School at Yale (WCS) will honor elected women in government at their first annual awards dinner on Saturday, June 3, in Westport. Guests and honorees will include Susan Molinari, former member of Congress; Nancy Wyman, Connecticut state comptroller; and Susan Bysiewicz, Connecticut's secretary of the state. The WCS also recently announced the election of two new members to their board of directors, Christyne F. Lategano-Nicholas, president and chief executive officer of NYC & Company, and Susan Molinari, chair of Susan Molinari, LLC.
On March 3 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., James S. Duncan, professor of diagnostic radiology and electric engineering, was inducted as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the premier professional organization for biomedical engineering in the United States. Duncan was cited "for creating unique computer algorithms and mathematical models for processing and interpreting medical images." Other AIMBE fellows include Yale faculty members Csaba Horvath, the Roberto C. Goizueta Professor of Chemical Engineering; Manohar Panjabi, professor of orthopaedics; and John Gore, professor of diagnostic radiology and applied physics.
Benoit B. Mandelbrot, Sterling Professor of Mathematical Sciences, received the Lewis Fry Richardson Award of the European Geophysical Society on April 24. This past fall, Mandelbrot, a recipient of numerous awards, received the John Scott Award from the City of Philadelphia "for ingenious men and women who contribute in some outstanding way to the comfort, welfare or happiness of mankind." His latest honorary degrees were granted by the Open University of the United Kingdom, Athens University of Business in Greece and St. Andrews University in Scotland. Considered "the father of fractals," Mandelbrot is a member of a number of academies including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
