Herpesviruses will be focus of international conference
The ninth biennial conference of the International Association for Research on Epstein-Barr Virus and Associated Diseases will continue through Tuesday, June 27, at the School of Medicine.
Titled "Tumor-Associated Herpesviruses," this multidisciplinary international conference, organized in part by Dr. I. George Miller Jr., the John F. Enders Professor and section chief of pediatric infectious diseases, will feature oral presentations, guest lectures, satellite symposia, workshops and poster sessions covering both basic science and medical aspects of herpesviruses that cause cancer in humans. Scientific sessions will encompass all aspects of oncogenic herpesvirology, including both Epstein-Barr virus and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus, as well as the animal viruses primate and murine gammaherpesvirus.
Individual sessions on such topics as "Latent Viral Gene Expression and Function," "Activation and Control of Viral Lytic Cycle" and "Immune Control and Escape" are open to interested members of the Yale community.
The conference will coincide with the annual International Festival of Arts and Ideas, featuring music and dance concerts, plays, films, recitations and street fairs. Also included in the conference schedule is a buffet dinner reception, catered meals and a dinner cruise aboard the "Mark Twain" on the Connecticut River.
Herpesviruses are important targets for the development of antiviral chemotherapy, molecular diagnostics and vaccines by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Sponsors of the conference include Wyeth Lederle Vaccines, Schering-Plough Research Institute, GlaxoWellcome, Henogen, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Gilead Sciences and Viagen Laboratories, Inc.
