New Michelin Guide spotlights Yale

In conjunction with the commemoration of Yale's 300th birthday in 2001, Michelin Travel Publications has unveiled a guide to Yale and New Haven -- marking the company's first-ever guide to a university and its host town.

"The Green Guide: Yale University and New Haven" will help tourists, prospective students, residents and alumni explore the area's special attractions, from its architecture, museums and galleries, theaters and other cultural attractions, to its broad and growing assortment of restaurants and hotels.

The Green and Red Guides of the France-based Michelin Corporation have been among the most respected travel series in the world. Every capital in Europe and many countries around the world have been the subjects of a Michelin guide.

This newest guide lists for $14.95. Michelin will donate $1 of every sale to New Haven Reads, a new community-based initiative designed to "build a city of readers in New Haven." The program, which draws from such national initiatives as the America Reads Challenge, will support and publicize literacy partnerships; gather and disseminate information about reading in New Haven; and collect and distribute books.

Michelin Vice President Gayle Sparks presented copies of the guide to President Richard C. Levin and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. at a press conference on June 15 outside the Yale Visitors Center. "We are delighted not only to launch our first collegiate guide, but also to help lay the groundwork for New Haven Reads," said Sparks. "Michelin has long been an advocate of literacy in the communities where we do business. As a travel book publisher, we believe it's essential to foster a love of reading and spirit of discovery in people of all ages."

Levin said, "We are proud to have attracted Michelin to focus on Yale and New Haven. We are delighted that visitors will now have an excellent introduction to our campus and our city."

Mayor DeStefano added, "The publication of this Michelin guide underscores the beneficial relationship between the city and Yale, as well as providing information about the community and our businesses. The assistance to the New Haven Reads literacy program makes it all the better."

The guide offers visitors and others advice on what to see and do on the campus and in the city. Users can explore Yale and New Haven pathways while learning about the University's traditions, its student life and its famous alumni, such as Presidents Bush and Clinton, actress and director Jodie Foster, football legend Walter Camp and inventor Eli Whitney, among many others.

Area attractions highlighted in the guide include the Yale University Art Gallery, the first university art museum in the western hemisphere; New Haven's Grove Street Cemetery, the nation's first chartered burial ground; and Wooster Square, a historic park featuring some of the most renowned architecture in New Haven.

Yale officials first contacted Michelin in December of 1997 to discuss the creation of a commemorative guide for the upcoming Yale Tercentennial, the University's 300th birthday celebration. They convinced Michelin that both Yale and the New Haven region would be the perfect subject for the company's first collegiate-based guide.

"The Green Guide: Yale University and New Haven" is among a handful of guides that sport the collection's new look and format. It features a new cover design -- in this case, adorned with Yale's mascot, Handsome Dan, among other images -- more photographs, livelier text, hotel and restaurant advice, and numerous sidebars on special topics of interest. The new format will be applied across the entire collection as additional titles and updates are released.

The guide is on sale at the Yale Bookstore and at other retailers in the New Haven area.
