'Europe Beyond 2000' marks
inauguration of new YCIAS council

The Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS) will celebrate the inauguration of its Council on European Studies with a symposium titled "Europe Beyond 2000" on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Rm. 203 of Henry R. Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Friday's sessions will be held 9:15 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday's session will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

"Europe Beyond 2000" will bring together a distinguished group of academic experts and practitioners from fields as diverse as anthropology, economics, history, law, management, political science and sociology. Among the participants will be Charles Maier, director of the Center for European Studies at Harvard University; Yale historian John Lewis Gaddis; and YCIAS Director Gustav Ranis.

Conference participants will examine the transformations that have occurred in Europe's economic, geographic, political and social landscape during the past decade -- the end of the cold war, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the wave of democratization and marketization in eastern and southern Europe, and the emergence of the European Union.

The event will feature panels exploring critical issues facing the continent, including post-cold war security, European integration, the building of markets and democracy, migration and ethnicity. It will conclude with a roundtable discussion on the future of Europe.

The Council on European Studies was formally established at YCIAS on July 1 through a merger of the Councils on Western Europe and on Russian and Eastern Europe. In announcing the decision to create the new council last spring, Ranis noted that the merger reflects the changing political, social and economic environment on the continent, and will allow YCIAS "much greater flexibility in expanding our activities and creating new opportunities" in European studies.
